Matt Jones on Baofeng UV-5R
…a cheap Chinese 2m/70cms FM transceiver. It's not a particularly good one, actually it's pretty poor in the grand scale of Radios, but it's not absolute garbage, and it does work as it's designed to. The thing that makes it iconic is the price. Where a Radio Amateur might have paid £300-£1000 for an equivalent product from a reputable manufacturer (Icon, Yeasu, Kenwood etc), I paid around £7 for this one from China (or £26 in the UK)! Which is astonishing when you consider this includes the Radio, Antenna, a Removable Li-ion Battery, two headsets, case, cradle dock and a charger.
The reason these are popular with a lot of folks is that they can be easily programmed to use the Licence Free PMR446 frequencies, (although technically it's not legal to do so) so they are popular with off-roaders, paintballers, security companies etc.
It’s a hell of alot of tech of £7 - and even works as a rechargeable torch!
…therein followed a long thread in our MeWe Group as listeners compared their memories and various pieces of Ham Radio kit!

Retro computing... remember this? MS Dos based Psion 5 rival - kind of - I think it pre-dates the Psion by a fair bit. I've got expansion cards and at least a printer interface somewhere too. This was my late father's. I recollect him using the MS Word compatible word processor and the spreadsheet. I went the Psion way.

I so wanted one of these when they were released. I’d gone from an Atari 800XL to and Atari ST and I was massively keen on trying their mobile kit until I got swept up with Psion too!
