In the latest episode of "The War Journal" podcast, bestselling author, Jim Sisco talks about the start of the Coalition Air Offensive and how that pivotal moment was a wakeup call that changed everyone’s attitudes and impacted his life. The Air Campaign had a profound effect on Jim’s relationships with his family and friends. It galvanized his rough abrasive exterior formed during a troubled childhood and time in the Marines, and hardened his heart so he could remain focused on the mission.

Reflecting on his journal entries 30 years later, Jim reveals how the start of the Air Campaign coincided with his Company’s 115-mile move west. He also recounts learning about the Company’s participation in a deception plan while standing Fire Watch and how that single event strengthened his own “need to know” mentality, reinforced his desire to question authority, and his drive to always ask “why” an important trait that he would instill in his children later in his life.

In a deeply personal segment, Jim shares how the war’s onset affected his feelings toward Ashly. In his journal entry he writes, “I became hardened and cut off my emotions—traits that enabled me to deal with my situation and became dominant parts of my personality.” He discusses how this shaped his identity and impacted his marriage and relationship with his children. The episode concludes with Jim sharing pictures of his children and recounting how his heart softened and how he became more affectionate toward his children—learning how to express his love for them in ways he had not done before with anyone else.
