Episode #14: Let Them Be The Helpers
Manage episode 446944010 series 2811122
One of the greatest gifts you can give your child is to teach them to serve others.
How can we teach our children to naturally offer to help others?
Today I want to focus on something I heard while listening to a Christian radio station the other day. It was so profound that I had to share it and tie it into this episode because it fit so perfectly.
They were talking about raising kids these days, and one single phrase they suggested teaching our children that will change their lives forever. It resonated so much with me because looking back, it’s exactly what my parents taught and instilled in me and many I grew up with were also taught. We must truly continue to teach this…or we are really going to suffer in the future.
The question is simply this: How can I help? Or worded another way…What can I do to help?
This phrase opens the door for our children to openly and whole-heartedly offer assistance and serve others…whether they are tired, overworked, or annoyed. It is knowing that it’s the right thing to do.
It cancels out a selfish heart. It cancels out greediness. It cancels out all of those negative characteristics.
It offers your child the opportunity to quite possibly be the ONLY ONE who offers it. The chance to show others what SHOULD be done. It offers your child the chance to model what being a good person…a follower of Jesus…a vessel of his love…looks like with a simple yet profound sentence.
You see…as The Whole Mama has grown and reached so many families…I have found more and more that truly believe that we as mamas (and parents) are the true teachers for our kids. Life goes far beyond what we read in a textbook or answer on a test. Our job as mothers (parents) is to find opportunities and teachable moments to offer our children. You don’t need a teaching degree for that…just an open heart.
We must follow our calling and responsibility as their parents to build their character, teach them right from wrong, model how to treat others, and more than anything…teach our children that true happiness will come when their hearts are full and their hands are serving.
Now I said this question, “How can I help?” but let us also remember that this phrase may just be offered through action. Teach your child to be “that kid”…the one who cared. The one who thought about you more than him/herself. The one who know the right thing to do…not for pride or personal gains, but because it was what God would have wanted him/her to do. Nothing more.
During a time such as this, when so much anger, resentment, judgement, frustration, and fear linger in the air, teach your child to keep the phrase, “How can I help?” in their hands and on their h
