In this very special episode of the Therapist Rising podcast, I sit down with my husband and business partner, Rob, for a candid conversation about what it's really like working together in our family business. We dive into the nitty gritty details of our journey, sharing the ups, downs, and everything in between.
Rob and I reminisce about how our love story began over 20 years ago on the touch football field, and how our relationship evolved from friendship to marriage and now to becoming business partners at Therapist Rising. I openly share about the immense privilege and support I had from Rob when I decided to leave my one-on-one therapy practice to start my online coaching business.
We pull back the curtain on what Rob's role looks like at Therapist Rising, and how he taught himself everything from building websites to editing podcasts to support the business in its early days. Rob also shares how he's stepped into more of a coaching role, teaching our Collective members about strategy, project management and implementation.
While there are so many benefits to working with your spouse, Rob and I also vulnerably share some of the challenges we face, like struggling to "turn off" the business talk, managing our relationship dynamics in a professional setting, and juggling business demands with family time, especially during busy launch periods."
We also reflect on some of the lessons we've learned along the way, and what we would do differently if we could turn back time, like Rob getting involved in the business earlier, me seeking out more mentorship on running a successful business, and both of us being more intentional about aligning our goals with our values from the beginning.
Finally, we leave you with our best advice for couples who are considering going into business together (hint: go for it, but be realistic and put the right foundations in place first!), as well as an exciting update on how this episode has inspired us to start incorporating more support for the business partners and key players of our Collective members.
Whether you're already in business with your significant other, or just exploring the possibility, this episode is a must-listen. Tune in now to get an inside look at the real life ups and downs of running a purpose-driven business with your life partner by your side.
