Collective numbers – Today’s French

Les nombres collectifs – Le français d’aujourd’hui

What are collective numbers in French? How do they work?
Say Easter Eggs In French

What are collective numbers? – C’est quoi, les nombres collectifs ?

Collective numbers are numbers used

  1. to describe a whole group of items: une quinzaine d’amis – a group of about 15 friends
  2. when dealing with an approximate number – higher than 7 – of items: une cinquantaine de crayons – about 50 pencils
  3. when it’s a pack of items: une douzaine d’œufs – a dozen eggs.

Practice – Exercice

Translate the sentences from one column to another. From French to English (la version) is easier, from English to French (la thèse) a bit more challenging.

  3. Nous avons deux centenaires dans notre établissement.

English

  1. And with this, I’d like to get a dozen of eggs.
  2. There were about thirty people at the party.
  3. We have two people who are 100 in this facility.
