We pay our respects to a generous Hawaiian man whose mission for the past few years has been to spread Aloha, to teach visitors to the islands about the spirit and the culture of the Hawaiian people. Manly Kanoa was a gentle giant, a man with a big heart who went out of his way to help a number of us writers with the written Hawaiian language. Manly was especially helpful to Michelle Winner and Graeme Kemlo as we worked on some stories from Hawaii. We have had Manly on the radio show since then. Sadly Manly passed away unexpectedly last month following complications from surgery. His business partner in Ho‘okipa, Pam Davis-Lee said of him: "Manly was known for his hospitality, his bigger than life show of greeting and aloha. He felt that practicing ho‘okipa is inclusive for everyone to do (to care for and show unconditional friendship)". Our Americas correspondent, Michelle Winner, herself Hawaiian-born, pays this tribute to Manly Kanoa.
