In 2001, British tourists Peter Falconio and his girlfriend Joanne Lees were part way through the trip of a lifetime around the world. They arrived in Australia early that that year. By June 2001, they were ready to embark on the ultimate road trip around the country.
One cold night in June 2001, the couple were driving through the remote Australian outback. A passing motorist named Bradley John Murdoch motioned to the couple to stop their vehicle, and they did. Peter got out of the car and what happened next is the stuff of nightmares.
Joanne heard a loud bang and Peter dropped out of sight. Bradley then attempted to abduct Joanne. She managed to escape and ran into the desert where she hid for hours. Bradley searched for her and came within inches of her, multiple times.
Joanne was rescued by a truck driver hours later. Bradley would be arrested and charged with Peter’s death in following years. The media interest in the trial was so large that the court building had to be renovated to the cost of almost $1m.
23 years later, Peter’s body has never been found.
