Here are a couple "rules of thumb" from Jon Finn in how to most effectively use the blues scale - i.e. play the flatted 3rd before the major 3rd and the flatted 5th before the natural 5th. Don't make these absolutes, Jon insists, but rather use the rules as guidelines into the finer points of blues scale. Don't hesitate to let your ears come up with their own rules.
