Among his notable achievements was founding the avant-garde punk-funk-jazz collective known as Defunkt, which since 1980 has released eight studio albums along with several live recordings.

Springing forth from St. Louis with a father who was a music teacher and two older, successful horn-playing brothers, during his multifaceted career Joseph has played with dozens of highly regarded musicians from jazz and a multitude of other genres. Some of the more famous names include Ornette Coleman, Nona Hendryx, Vernon Reid, Ronny Drayton, Tyrone Davis, Albert King, Etta James, Yusef Lateef, Seven Eleven, Dr. John and Candy Dulfer.
