Featured in TIR Episode 213, Part 2 of 2: Peter Rivera, also known as Peter Hoorelbeke, and best known as drummer and lead singer of the seminal rock-funk band Rare Earth during its peak success of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Breaking the mold as a white group signed to Motown Records, Rare Earth racked up four straight Top 30 albums and five Top 20 singles. Those songs included sizzling remakes of the Temptations’ “(I Know) I’m Losing You” and “Get Ready,” as well as the all-time funk-rock classics “Born to Wander” and “I Just Want to Celebrate.”

Rivera broke from the band in the mid-1970s to record two albums as a third of the Capital Records’ group known as HUB. He then rejoined Rare Earth from the late 1970s though mid-1980s. In more recent years, Rivera has done two albums under his own name, and in 2021 has been releasing new songs including the uptempo “Shuttin’ Down” and the mellow “Lifetime.”
