Officieel werd de slavernij in Suriname in 1863 afgeschaft. Maar contractarbeiders uit Indonesië leefden daarna nog jaren onder slechte omstandigheden op de plantages. Ieder jaar vieren we op 1 juli ketikoti, de afschaffing van de slavernij. Maar met de vrijmaking was het plantagesysteem in Suriname nog niet zomaar verdwenen. In deze aflevering van de UBLpodcast vertelt historicus en surinamist Rosemarijn Hoefte hoe Javaanse contractarbeiders de rol van de slaagemaakten overnamen.
