Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a new surgical approach to treating patients with movement disorders and is being evaluated for many other neurological and psychological indications. Many providers may not understand the indications and contraindications for referring patients for a DBS evaluation. With over 30% of surgical failures due to inappropriate patient selection, this understanding is essential. Previously, movement disorder patients were managed with medications and permanent ablative procedures. Deep brain stimulation provides a less invasive, fully adjustable surgical option for many patients with movement disorders that are no longer maximally responsive to pharmacotherapy.
