Clare Farrell is a founding member of Extinction Rebellion. She’s an activist, artist, designer, communicator and organiser.

If you’ve ever seen the Adam McKay movie ~ Don’t Look Up ~ with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, in which an asteroid is found to be on a collision course with Earth, and the protagonists go on national tv news in America to try and raise the alarm, only to be met by the banal absurdity of how mainstream news works.

Well, Clare Farrell has that role in real life as part of XR. She appears on TV to speak on behalf of this decentralised movement, especially when the show has potential to be a bit antagonistic. A surreal experience to find yourself in. It’s not the every day.

In this episode we talk about Clare’s origins in fashion and design and creative activism, up to being part of the originating group of Extinction Rebellion in 2018. We discuss their demands for net zero carbon emissions by 2025, citizens assemblies and direct democracy, and reparatory justice for nations and people around the world most impacted by the climate crisis.

We also talk about the non-functional political process, expanding police powers in the UK and Australia, and punitive jail sentences and fines being introduced to discourage peaceful protest. About the failings of mainstream media to even pretend they’re here to faithfully report the news and context of the world we’re living in, not just for the climate issue, and what this all means for us and the planet.
