In this episode of Underground Magnolia Podcast, we delve into the captivating world of jazz guitarist Garry Percell. His latest song is making waves on smooth jazz and R&B radio, and it’s none other than his remake of the classic slow jam, “Going In Circles.”

The Collaborators - Garry Percell and Tony Terry

After envisioning Terry’s vocals on the track after listening to older versions of “Going In Circles,” Percell joined forces with the singer, best known for his hit “With You” in 1990. Despite not knowing each other personally, they hit it off with undeniable musical chemistry. Percell’s wailing acoustic/electric guitar coupled with Terry’s velvety honed vocals breathe new life into the timeless song.

Origins of “Going In Circles”

“Going In Circles” has a storied history. First popularized by Friends of Distinction in the late '60s, it later found fresh interpretations by Luther Vandross, Charlie Wilson (of the Gap Band) and others.

Sound Journey

Percell grew up with a musical family that supported his love for the guitar and his 25-plus years of guitar expertise. His biggest artist influence? The legendary Ernie Isley of The Isley Brothers. As a mainstay on smooth jazz radio, Percell wears multiple hats: producer, composer, and sought-after studio and stage musician. His collaborations span genres, including playing with memorable artists like Chairman of the Board and the Betty Davis “Funk House” band. He most recently cut singles work with saxophonists Marcus Anderson and Jason Jackson. Notably, Adam Hawley, the best-selling guitarist, produced the new “Going in Circles.”

A Personal Dedication

While “Going In Circles” is a passionate ballad about lost love, Garry Percell adds a poignant layer by dedicating the song to his late daughter.

The Singles Strategy

Percell’s recent releases follow a deliberate path. Rather than full albums, he focuses on impactful singles.
