What Creative People do When They Hit a Wall

Have you always thought that some people have a limitless reservoir of creativity, while the rest of the population sits waiting to hear their genius ideas? The truth is that even right-brain, innovative people run out of creative ideas sometimes, or they simply get in a rut because they’re tired or overworked, just like you. Also know that everyone has some creativity, you just have to find your source of inspiration!

On Unfiltered Marketing, our podcast at SJC Marketing, we recently discussed what to do when you need a new source of brainstorming fuel. Here are a few ideas from our team:

Read, explore, review: One go-to method for reviving a dry well of creativity for our team is this three-step method. The catchy title is meant to emulate the easy “stop, drop and roll” that everyone knows from fire safety training. Read, explore, review is a way to refresh your creative mind:

  • Read blogs, books, anything you enjoy. It doesn’t have to be marketing-related or even business-related. The idea is to get your wheels turning in a different pattern than they are currently in and get some new buzz into your brain. Read what you enjoy.
  • Explore the magazine room at the library. Pull out a few issues of magazines that are not on your typical reading list. Again, the purpose is not to seek a particular vein of industry, but to simply explore what’s new in areas where you don’t usually spend brain energy. See what’s hopping in other areas of life.
  • Review notes from your initial meetings with the client. That’s where you likely captured the heart of what your client is after, and you’ll likely be reminded of an area of discussion that you’ve yet to explore in your content or with your other marketing tools.

Follow brands you love: Who makes videos that always make you laugh? Is there a brand that just seems to get what you’re into? These are the brands that you should be following. You won’t copy a particular strategy, but it will keep you thinking about how to connect with your audience, and you’ll likely pull snippets of ideas from a variety of brands that speak to you personally.

Seek out wisdom: It’s easy to choose the cop out and lay your head on your desk, saying “I’m just not in the mood to be creative today.” Read these 20 quotes from Creative Market, though, and you’ll see that so much of creativity is simply showing up, ready to work.

At SJC Marketing, we know that one of the best vehicles for creativity is humor. Get together with your team, listen to Unfiltered Marketing, and laugh with us. We’re all striving for our next big idea, so grab a cup of coffee and come join the fun.
