Shehrezade Mian's early life took her all over the world, finally settling in Pakistan where she lived out most of her adolescence. In that time she saw the vastly different ways that countries around the world view women, family unites, art, and society as a whole.

As an adult she moved to Canada to pursue a career in film, something that was simply not available in Pakistan. But after graduating with a degree in film production, the realities of working in Canada set in. There simply were little to no opportunities to someone who was not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Those next few years called into question everything she worked for and everything she left behind, as she set her mind on getting her permanent residency.

Now Shehrezade is a producer and filmmaker who tells stories that are inspired by everything she's experienced. In our interview, we talk about what makes a film 'Canadian' in a country full of immigrants, the complexities of funding and opportunity in Canada, and what it means to carry your identity with you wherever you go.
