Gemina the Crooked Neck Giraffe
Manage episode 341140446 series 3277351
Gemina was a Rothschild's giraffe born on July 16, 1986, at the San Diego Wild Animal Park and was moved to the Santa Barbara Zoo when she was approximately one year old.
Most newborn calves are over six feet tall, and within half an hour they can stand and walk around on their own however Gemina was seen still stumbling, and occasionally falling over when she was two years old. Although tests and x-rays showed no sign of injury, its possible that her crooked neck was the result of a trip or fall. Slowly, over time, her neck vertebrae began to jut out at an angle.
Gemina died on 9th January 2008 and her bones are now on display at the Santa Barbra Zoo.
