Josephine Joesph is thought to have been born on July 4th 1891 in Austria. When she turned 18, she travelled to Ellis Island, New York and in the 1920’s took to the stage and began performing in local sideshows as a human oddity.

Like many so called "sideshow hermaphrodites" of the early 20th century, she modified her body, presenting herself as strong and masculine on the right, and delicate and feminine on the left. This was achieved by exercising one side of the body to define muscle tone, she was well tanned and and she had her hair on just that side undercut. The other side, the feminine side, would be covered while not performing to keep it pale and it remained un-exercised.

Josephine Joesph passed away on 11th July 1966 - one week after her 75th birthday.
