SPOILER ALERT: This week’s topic isn’t glamorous or at all exciting, but it’s probably one of the most important topics we’re going to cover all season long: your wedding contracts. As you plan your wedding, you’ll likely spend more money and sign more contracts than you probably have in your entire life up to that point. We’re here today to help you understand the ins and outs of reading and understanding your wedding contracts, red flags you should watch out for, and common questions we get from our clients. If you’re planning a wedding, reading a contract, worried about killer butterflies ruining your wedding, or just love hearing our voices, this episode was made just for you.

The Boring Stuff: Contracts, Contracts, Contracts

  • Every contract has a scope of work (services provided) - contract should clearly list what’s being provided. When you’re comparing vendor services, make sure you’re comparing the same services.
  • The What Ifs/In Case of Emergency: Force majeure (act of god, out of both parties control), breach of contract
    • What if YOU want to postpone or cancel?
    • What if THEY aren’t able to show up? (sick, injured) Do they have a policy in their contract?
  • Travel/Other Vendor fees - what are you paying for?
    • Destination - Airfare, hotel, meals, mileage?
    • Local vendors: parking, meals, mileage
    • Damage fee - candle wax on linens, broken vases, damaged items
    • Hidden fees: photo booths require covering, tables, power
    • Labor fees: Rental companies add this so be sure to understand before booking
  • Make sure you understand when payments are due and how much
    • Also understand whether they are non refundable or transferable
  • Understand the logistics
    • Names on the contract
    • Start and end times
    • Client responsibility vs vendor responsibility
    • Liability and release - if someone gets sick, or allergic reaction, or falls
  • What happens if they don’t follow through on their contract?
    • Delivery of photos is past the expected time that it was promised
    • Wrong color cake
  • Other tips
    • Read the whole contract and ask questions if you don’t understand
    • Don’t be afraid to ask for minor amendments (ex: social media, using photos)
    • Look for red flags
    • Before you sign, make sure you’re 100% comfortable. If you have a wedding planner, have her review it too as another set of eyes.
    • At the end of the day, a wedding is a lot of money and you have every right to ask questions, get clarity and feel good about the money you’re spending
  • Hiring professionals allows you to have solid contracts and piece of mind.
  • Shout out to Paradise Monarchs - Guaranteeing no killer butterflies!
