In 2010, the community of Montcoal, West Virginia, was rocked by one of the country's worst coal mine disasters. An explosion at the Upper Big Branch coal mine left 29 dead and prompted a massive local, state and federal investigation that resulted in a number of major new Mine Safety and Health Administration regulations.
