Retorik ya da eski ismiyle Belâgat, etkileyici ve ikna edici konuşma sanatı Sözcük güncel kullanımda "etkileyici ve ikna edici olmakla beraber içtenlikten veya anlamlı içerikten yoksun lisan" anlamında da kullanılır. Kavram Yunanca rhētorikos (ῥητορικός) "hitabet" kavramından türemiştir. Antik Yunanistan'da MÖ 5. yüzyılda Sokrates çevresindekiler tarafından kullanılmış olan bu kelime, ilk kez Platon’un Gorgias adlı eserinde geçmiştir.
