Welcome to Episode 46 of the We Are Makers podcast! In this captivating episode, we journey to Austin, Texas, where we have the privilege of sitting down with the incredible Nao Tomii. Nao's passion for creating masterful pieces has taken him from his humble beginnings in Japan to becoming a renowned sculptor and frame builder in the United States.
Born and raised in Japan, Nao's artistic journey began at an early age. His love for drawing bikes, motorcycles, and cars fueled his creative fire. Determined to pursue his artistic dreams, he ventured to the United States to study sculpture, graduating in 2000. For the next 12 years, Nao honed his skills as a sculptor in Massachusetts, specializing in crafting molds, restorations, and casting. His exceptional talent even earned him recognition in prestigious galleries across Boston, showcasing his own unique creations.
In 2006, Nao's life took an exciting turn when he delved into the world of cycling. Through his newfound passion, he connected with local riders, including talented frame builders. The exquisite artistry and craftsmanship of their custom-made frames inspired him deeply, sparking the birth of his own brand, 3RRR Products. Nao began by crafting intricate chain rings, but his enthusiasm for the craft soon evolved into a burning desire to build his own custom bicycle frames. With every frame he created, Nao found comfort and fulfillment, realizing that frame building had become his own form of sculpture.
