THE TRUE CASE THIS STORY IS BASED ON: This tragic story recounts the abduction, murder, and subsequent investigation of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway in Westminster, Colorado in October 2012. On October 5, Jessica left for school but never arrived. An extensive search ensued, involving hundreds of volunteers and multiple law enforcement agencies. A week later, Jessica's dismembered body was found in a nearby open space. The investigation initially explored various leads, including a possible connection to another kidnapping case. A crucial break came when police linked Jessica's murder to an attempted abduction at Ketner Lake in May of the same year. On October 23, 17-year-old Austin Reed Sigg confessed to his mother, who then called 911. Sigg admitted to abducting Jessica, sexually assaulting her, and brutally murdering her. He also confessed to the earlier attempted abduction at Ketner Lake. In October 2013, Sigg pleaded guilty to all charges. Due to his age at the time of the crimes, he was sentenced to life in prison plus 86 years, with the possibility of parole after 40 years. The case shocked the community, with the judge describing it as a manifestation of real evil.
