August 13, 2017 – Principles for Prevailing – Paul’s Prevailing Testimony
Part 2 of the series, Principles For Prevailing, is based on 2nd Timothy 2:6-8.
For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.
This sermon goes a step further by encouraging us to find a way to win by looking at Paul’s testimony. We know that Paul is just about to die. We also know that, as a Christian, he has fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith. He has obviously acquired a toughness, has known the ins and outs of spiritual warfare and is now sharing his knowledge with Timothy before he passes on to his eternal life. So as we pass through the letter that he writes to Timothy we find certain principles that help him successfully prevail through the trials of life. In chapter 1 we see he is not ashamed to be called a Christian, in Chapter 2 we see exhortations helping him prevail, in Chapter 3 we see the intensity of the last days and in chapter 4 we see his positive testimony.
What stands out is word –good fight– as opposed to the many fights that we have throughout our lives. If we are fighting ourselves, our neighbor, our family…we are fighting the wrong enemy. Our enemy is a spiritual one that requires resolve and commitment, a person who does not shrink back -enduring- it requires Christians to be active and not passive, awake, watchful and not asleep.
Finishing
Our race is a marathon, not a sprint. It is about change throughout our lives -renewal- to a conquering and enduring faith. Some have checked out, but we are required to be in the race -to stand- and when knocked down -stand.
Meditation
Have you checked out when things became difficult and sometimes unbearable? How can you prevent this from happening? Remember, Demas. No matter what, return to the good fight. Don’t give up!
“For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone… (2 Tim 4:10)
