My friend Addie Broyles once told me that when I was interviewing people in Austin with my portable handheld recorder, that I was capturing modern history. I brushed that comment off when she made it since it seemed a little overblown - but in light of today's (April 28th, 2014) news of Robert Vasquez passing (Owner of Tamale House on Airport Blvd - and hangover cure to many of Austin's hipsters) I decided to listen to my interview from 2013 with his niece Carmen. As self serving as it might sound. I now agree with Addie. Carmen is charming and candid about how the east side of Austin has developed and the leap of faith her and her brothers took in reopening her Mother's restaurant space.
