“If you care about something you have to protect it – If you’re lucky enough to find a way of life you love, you have to find the courage to live it.”
Owen Meaning has so many wise sayings, and all in that irritating but endearing voice in ALL CAPS throughout the entire book. One of the more memorable characters in modern literature. He says this to the book’s narrator, John Wheelwright. I love the quote in and of itself for the threefold wisdom it offers. First, if you care about something you have to defend it, care for it, keep it safe. Basically, it’s the same way as saying the second part, “if you’re lucky enough to find a way of life you love.” Yes, it doesn’t just come from willing it, there’s some grace involved, some parts that are outside yourself that come into play, which we could call luck. Finally, though, it takes courage. From first realization, to defense, to gratitude, to courage.
