Between 1861 and 1865, the United States was torn in half mainly because of slavery. Those states and their constituents who were for it and those who were against it. The result was civil war between the northern states and southern, brother against brother, friends against friends. In 1863, the citizens of Gettysburg found themselves seeing the battle with their own eyes and experiencing the events firsthand. The horror of that battle seeped into the soil of the very ground they walked on. So many lives lost, so much pain and unknowing. Boys cut down well before they were to be able to experience life. A single civilian woman just twenty years old, trying to do her part to bring comfort and a piece of home to men she had never met became victim to the bloody war surrounding her and her family. The tragic end for so many came fast, that it is no wonder the town of Gettysburg is now haunted with the moments of the tragic war over a 160 years ago.
