In Far Rockaway, the nearest hospital equipped to treat people with the most serious injuries is close to 9 miles away.

Now, residents are one step closer to getting a new long-awaited medical trauma center after Mayor Adams and the City Council included $50 million in the most recent budget for the facility.

Council member Selvena Brooks-Powers, who represents Southeast Queens and the Rockaways, says that's only a fraction of what is needed to get the project over the finish line. She joined WNYC Morning Edition host Michael Hill to talk about it.
