On February 10, 1863, a wedding occurs in Manhattan’s Grace Church that takes New York City and the rest of the world by storm. The “fairy wedding” as it will be known, has a guest list that consists of the crème de le crème of high society and is so popular with the masses that it knocks coverage of the American Civil War (which is at its height) off the cover of the New York Times for three straight days. The groom, Charles Stratton, and his bride, Lavinia Warren are not politicians, or famous sports figures, or famous industrialists of the day, they are what was commonly known at the time as “Freaks.” Freaks who perform under the tutelage of one Phineas Taylor (aka P.T.) Barnum of Barnum & Baily Circus fame. Charles, who goes by the stage name General Tom Thumb, and Lavinia stand just 3’4” and 2’8” respectively thus are considered dwarfs or little people. Despite their diminutive size, they are arguably the most famous couple in the world in the mid-late 19th century. Together they perform in over 20,000 shows, be seen by over 50 million people on five continents, and live out a decades-long love story that has to be heard to be believed.
