UVA's Bicentennial Stories initiative from WTJU 91.1 FM tells our collective story. It helps us understand our shared history and make meaning in the University today. And as we look ahead, these stories help us shape the future of the University and our role in a democratic society. Teresa Sullivan, 8th President of UVA, 2010-2018 Interviewer: “I’ve read a lot about your ‘quiet leadership.’ Do you like that title?” Sullivan: “I don’t object to that title. What’s the opposite, noisy leadership? “I like to surround myself with the best people I can get. I also — to the extent possible — empower people to make decisions in their own portfolios. If those are controversial, I expect to be notified about that. I don’t like to read about that in the newspaper. I don’t care if it’s in the newspaper later, but I want to know it’s coming. “And I believe in respecting the dignity of everybody. One way you do that is, when you’ve got somebody to reprimand, you do that in private. You praise in public, you reprimand in private.”
