- We learn the importance of developing our internal compass so we can honour our personal values and beliefs in a diverse context whilst respecting the current environment.
- We learn that even when the move is your choice, the sense of belonging can take time.
- And that being an 'accompanying spouse' and being part of an International Career Couple can happen simultaneously.
- There is great advice to become part of the narrative early by taking a proactive role in the narrative of your future by learning to set your boundaries, articulate how you feel and communicate these well. We are encouraged to do work around this by asking how do you feel, what would make you happy, what could you compromise on and what is a sacrifice.
- We consider doing away with the mindset of the 'trailing spouse' and leaning into the mindset of the expat partnership - it aides decision making and helps you to face shared challenges.
- We recognise that when a company cares, and in this case shows support and empathy, it is positive for the psychological relationship and improves how the expat partnership arrive in their new location.
- We recognise that working with a coach can keep you on course and on purpose through the challenging and good times. Where possible, proactive coaching is an advantage.
