Jesus began His earthly ministry preaching that the “Kingdom of God is at hand” – i.e., it is here and near to us. He was speaking of the Church, that Kingdom of Heaven that is “not of this world,” but which endures unto this very day. Now, in the beginning of Chapter Nine, Jesus instructs the disciples that this Kingdom will one day be infused with an otherworldly power! We read about that infusion in the second chapter of Acts, at Pentecost. The Old Ship of Zion – the Church – was certainly established by Jesus during His earthly ministry, but it didn’t truly set sail until the Holy Spirit came in power on the day of Pentecost. We still need this Holy Ghost power to succeed in fulfilling the commands of Jesus in His Kingdom!
