Prior to Facebook and Instagram there was Mxit. Now Mxit was really boring unless your friends were on it too. And so the frenzy around it grew. Amazing that we call these "social networking" sites but the minute we get onto them we look for what's familiar. We tell our friends and family about it because it is much better when we have people we know also on it. This happens because at our very core we are social creatures. We feel out of place when we don't feel like we belong and what makes us feel that way is other people who are just like us. We are constantly seeking our tribe. Successful marketing lies in your product or service being one of the tribal markings of a particular tribe. It lies in a particular group identifying with what you do and adopting it into their tribe. Facebook, Mxit, Twitter and others haven't created a tribe. They have simply created a new tribal marking for tribes. Now similar tribes from around the globe can connect through a singular vehicle. When it comes to your product or service which tribe would value it? Which marketing strategy are you going to use to entice that tribe to adopt your product or service into their tribal way of life? That is the conundrum of a marketing campaign.
