As many of you know, Shaunae is a professional photographer and Sarah is a graphic designer. We wanted to start a discussion and cover all your topics related to photography and design. Last week, Shaunae answered your photography questions. In today’s episode, Shaunae asks Sarah questions provided by our listeners about all things related to design.

How did you get started?

I have always loved creating. From a young age I was drawing and crafting, but it took me awhile to realize that it was what I wanted to do for a career. I came across Design Arts in a list of majors offered by the University of Wisconsin system and ended up applying for the major. I really didn't understand exactly what I was getting into, but as soon as I started to learn about the process and begin designing pieces I fell in love with it.

What is a brand? What do you need to get one started?

The easiest way for me to define a brand is to call it an experience. It is the experience from the moment someone first hears about you, to contacting you, being provided your service and even how they feel afterwards. As a logo designer, I will be honest and say a logo or any of your visuals are not what make your brand. These things are called your brand identity, and they assist your over all experience and help create recognition of your brand.

What do non-designers need to know about design?

First, be aware that design is not simply about making things look pretty. Yes we do want things to look good. But design is about communication and solving a problem to reach an objective. This could be attending an event, picking up a book off of a shelf, defining your services. There is a process to this in understanding your client and knowing how they will best respond to take that action towards your objective.

But in terms of DIY design, don't be afraid of color, you can use a color wheel to help you know which colors pair nicely together. However, just like fonts and images, don't go overboard and put in to many colors or fonts. I preach simplicity in design and it can be one of the hardest things to curate a design back to its simplest elements. You want to make sure that your message is able to come across clearly.
