Lydia Bouroumand is one of the quiet, seldom heralded but nonetheless true heroes of Claremont. In this disarmingly casual yet touching interview, Lydia outlines the events and influences in her life and career that have brought her to now serve as the President of Claremont Meals on Wheels, and Senior Case Manager and Director of Resource Specialists with AgingNext. She reveals the motivation and source of dedication to helping and caring for Claremont's under-served seniors - those who need help most, yet have few to no options or resources.
Lydia highlights just a few of the extraordinary services she and the staff members of both groups provide, and how Meals on Wheels and AgingNext add to their client's quality of life in so many more ways beyond just a nutritious mid-day meal. She relates how, despite the unexpected and unfortunate hurdles of COVID's impact and cuts in city funding, Lydia and her staff members have not missed a beat in helping otherwise underserved seniors, even to the point of keeping pricing fixed despite cost increases in food, fuel, facilities, and more.
Delivering over 18,000 meals in 2020, and helping hundreds of AgingNext clients with issues surrounding transportation, Social Security benefits, housing, care planning, referral, family consultation, advocacy, and more, Lydia and her staff every day fulfill their mission to help people live with dignity in their own homes. To paraphrase Forrest Gump, "Heroes are as heroes do" and this episode displays that Lydia and her groups do way more good for the people in Claremont and, by association, the quality and value of living in this city than almost anyone would imagine.
