On June 6th, Syrian-American blogger Amina Abdallah Arraf al Omari — known for her web page about being a lesbian in Syria titled, A Gay Girl in Damascus — was reported to have been abducted by men who appeared to be Syrian government forces. International media outlets like The Guardian picked up the story, and well-meaning LGBT activists worldwide began to organize to support her release.

But as with so many threads that make up the complex web of the Syrian Civil War, Amina’s arrest and the spotlight it put on her blog began to demand more explanation. Who is Amina? What happened? And why is this story so important to our understanding of the Syrian Civil War?
