Carolyn Oakley interviews UK ambient-folk artist Ollie Dixon. Ollie is an independent artist and songwriter based in Devon and is currently in the process of releasing a brand new EP of songs, including the already released singles 'Islands', 'St Anges' and 'Drifting' when I met with him to talk about his songwriting and music journey so far.
Ollie started out after leaving college early to pursue his career in music. Initially performing his songs at local open mic nights, he quickly progressed to create and release his first EP in 2019, booking his own gigs and being asked to play at different music festivals. The 2020 pandemic saw live music opportunities come to a halt and he was forced to pause and reflect on the music he was creating.
Meeting his band members, Lee Crowd and Rach Adamson and teaming up with a producer Rich Stockley, Ollie is now taking his music into a new direction with a brand new EP, set to be released later in 2022. The lead off singles from the EP are already being picked up in the new music press, blogs and being supported by BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio. Ollie is now very much back on the touring circuit, performing at a number of the UK summer festivals and being asked to support a number of artists and bands this coming autumn.
We discuss the challenges faced being an independent artist in the 2020s but also how far you can go when you are creating the music you love and working along side people who help and inspire you to create the best music you can and how important it is to appreciate the ride, friendships and moments that working in music can bring.
If you would like to hear more of Ollie's music or find out where he will next be performing live - you can find and follow Ollie on his social media channels, Bandcamp, YouTube, Spotify and Instagram etc. Links are here:
