My family recently had the pleasure of attending Pensacon, a Comicon located in Pensacola, Florida! We love getting to attend Comicons because they are a space where we can be accepted exactly as we are! And we also get to meet a lot of other great people with whom we can “nerd out” about our favorite fandoms!

I think part of the reason the kids I work with are drawn to a lot of these stories and characters is because they are looking for a hero. And who needs a hero more than a person who is going through some difficult things? In my online Jewish Cultural History class, we were talking just the other week about how pretty much all modern day super heroes were created by Jewish writers and artists, which makes sense as the Jewish people have been through some hard stuff throughout their history!

I love having the opportunity to highlight their heroes on my podcast and when possible let them come on the podcast to meet their heroes! I’m not necessarily looking for some random celebrity guests for my podcast. I’m looking for the people that are meaningful to my students who are also good role models! I want to hear about what it is that attracts my students to this character, author, actor, artist, writer, fandom, genre, etc.

At Pensacon, I had the pleasure of being able to record a very short 5 minute podcast with Adassa who played Dolores in Encanto. Adassa is someone who has been through difficult health challenges, not unlike some of the students I work with, and I found the lessons she has taken from those experiences to be extremely powerful! I am so excited to share that brief podcast with you today, and I hope that the background noise does not make it too difficult to hear!
