Positively Trek 259: Nova Squadron, Red Squad, and Badmirals

The Problem with Starfleet Meritocracy

The future as seen in Star Trek is one free from the concerns of modern-day capitalism. In the words of Jean-Luc Picard, “The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in our lives. We work to better ourselves and the rest of humanity.” So, what drives humans in their day-to-day lives in the future?

In this episode of Positively Trek, hosts Dan and Barry take a look at Starfleet and the Federation through the lens of meritocracy: a system based on influence or power wielded by those whom society deems are educated and skilled. We also examine some problems that might arise from that system through the examples of Nova Squadron, Red Squad, and a flock of seriously corrupt “badmirals.”
