Today, Steven Jones and Amy Vodarek host a conversation with Lisa Simms Booth on her personal and professional experience with cancer.

Lisa Simms Booth is the Executive Director at Smith Center for Healing and the Arts. Founded in 1996, Smith Center is a Washington, DC-based nonprofit for individuals living with a cancer diagnosis, their caregivers, and the greater community. Smith Center offers a wider variety of programming–from yoga and mindfulness to knitting to writing to peer-led support groups and intensive retreats for people to explore their relationships to their healing, grief, and their sense of self in a safe space.

In this conversation, Lisa explores her personal connection to cancer, with the diagnosis, treatment, and eventual death of her mother, and talks about how that experience has inspired and informed her work at the Smith Center for Healing and the Arts.

Lisa goes on to share the power of finding the art practice that speaks to you, as well as the healing power to be found in community. This means not only sharing your journey with other people living through the same experience, but in a greater group of people who share your interests and passions.

We also discuss the importance of recognizing people as a whole individual, beyond a singular diagnosis. Lisa shares her personal tools for self-expression and what she’s learned as a leader throughout all of the stages of the pandemic.

Lisa’s wisdom was too expansive to be contained in one conversation. This discussion will continue next week in Episode 12, where we’ll further discuss Lisa’s experiences as a leader.

If you're looking to expand your leadership influence, shift your results, and tell a compelling story that differentiates your business, we’d love to talk to you. Schedule a conversation with an Altus Team Member here: https://altusgrowthpam.as.me/Zoom30min

How do you help people thrive? How do you help them live? A new definition of healing. Which doesn’t mean cure. Healing means growth and transformation. It means finding those inner resources to go through what you’re going through.

We don’t want anyone to feel like they’re walking through this journey alone. We want to partner with you. And we want to help you build community.

You’re not just your diagnosis. . . . We want to help you fill the other spaces beyond your treatment, and remember that you are still YOU, not just someone with cancer.
