Ep 60 - Who Cares?
Manage episode 408789279 series 3560694
It's so easy to fall into this mindset: does anyone even care?
We release music into an ocean of singles and albums being thrown out into the sonicsphere every day. Life problems come up all the time that shift our focus away from our art and passion. And, of course, musicians will never stop being the flakiest and least reliable people on the planet. All of these life factors can build up, leading us creative folks to develop a strong sense of apathy and defeatism. After all, most of us aren't making much money from our art. Isn't the great goal in life to make a big pile of money?
Sometimes I have to remind myself that I need a reason to get out of bed in the morning. My life is not worth living if I wake up and don't want to go about my day. Music (along with family and friends) is my top motivation to keep going. At the core of it: I LOVE making music. I simply cannot fully express myself without an instrument in my hands. Is music the top priority in my life 100% of the time? Of course not. But it is, without a doubt, the passion project that has brought me the most joy and self-fulfillment throughout my 30 years on this planet.
It's okay to take breaks. Burnout can easily cause that music flame to fade and flicker. But, in the times when you just want to quit because you haven't reached your goals or don't feel like you have enough fans (or whatever other frustration you may have) just remember that you really do love making music. Fans and followers are great, but the most important part is that you are enjoying the process for yourself, that you are able to creatively express yourself and collaborate with other artists seeking to do the same.
I am not sure if my life would be worth living without music.
