Text: Mark 1:16-20 (ESV)

16 Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.

FOLLOW ME

Jesus started His ministry by chosing His followers or disciples. He called the fishermen brothers Simon [Peter] and Andrew, while casting their nets into the sea. A little while, Jesus also invited Zebedee’s sons James and John, while mending their nets. No one was thinking and expecting that Jesus will invite them to follow Him that day. Life’s opportunities come at an unexpected moment. They were busy in their daily routines when the invitation came.

The choice is either to remain a fisherman or be a follower of Jesus. Opportunity is a blessing disguised as difficulty. Should they follow Jesus, they have to drop everything – nets, boats and even parents. And they did it immediately and unequivocably. To be a disciple of Jesus is a tall order as a call of a lifetime commitment, is it not?

Jesus promised them a more meaningful life of catching men.Jesus is inviting them how to live not how to earn a living. To be men catchers, they should be first faithful Jesus’ followers. The cart could not be before the horse, could it be?

The disciples have been with Jesus for three years, wherever He goes. Hence, our primary concern everyday is how to be a faithful follower of Jesus like them. And He would transform us to become effective fishers of men.
