A Sunday morning sermon by Peter DuMont. The way of the disciple of Jesus is the way of powerless strength. Scripture is filled with stories of faith marked by overmatched people who find great victory against overwhelming odds. The Hebrews before the Red Sea with Egypt behind them, David standing before Goliath, the disciples standing before thousands of hungry people with a few loaves and fish between them. Mordecai is another hero of faith within the Esther story. Long before Haman, he knew what it was to be powerless. He watched the fall of Jerusalem unfold, was carried into captivity in a foreign land, was pressed into service in ways that likely marked him forever. He lived as an exile, a man without kingdom, capital, or army to protect him. Despite severe hardship and trial, we find in Mordecai a person unbowed to his circumstance, moving in great strength in the midst of an overwhelming situation. He carries strength to face the truth of Haman’s threat to the Jewish people, refusing consolation or escape. He lives in the strength of God’s promise to the children of Abraham, confident that deliverance will somehow come. He lives in a strength of relationship, calling forth courage and profound sacrifice from Esther to meet his own as they each embrace strength within powerlessness. How might their witness call forth a similar response within us?
