The giant monitor lizards are scavengers and help get rid of any dead animals which leads to some interesting benefits for other species in the area.

But the number of heath goannas is declining and there’s hope they will benefit from a project to restore southern Yorke Peninsula’s landscape by returning locally-extinct species.
