Having recently released their sophomore LP, Echoes Of Resistance, to great acclaim and support ranging from Nick Grimshaw on BBC 6 Music to Tash LC on BBC Radio 1, the pair offer up their versions of two very different pieces of music that have become a mainstay in their live sets, and means a lot to them personally. First up is their version of the deeply rooted Afro-disco come pop/soul classic Going Back To My Roots. “We love this song. The lyrics resonate with us, talking about the meaning of connection to a land and its people. The history of this song is also fascinating, from Hugh Masekela and Orlando Julius through Odyssey and Richie Havens. We wanted to give it our own flavour. You can’t choose your heritage and where you are born. It is always a part of you and we like to celebrate that.” Written and first recorded by Lamont Dozier in 1977, Going Back To My Roots was famously covered by Richie Havens in 1980 before becoming a huge crossover hit when interpreted by disco outfit Odyssey in 1981. It’s that version that provides the inspiration for the artwork on this release, courtesy of designer Michael Sallit, but musically Raz & Afla very much give their take their own unique dance floor feeling. It’s a version which has received support from Craig Charles and Lauren Laverne on BBC 6 Music. “It’s just one of those ones that you’ve got to dance when you hear it! It’s definitely gonna be in my DJ setsthis year, I’ll tell you that!“ Craig Charles “They say, ‘We want to give it our own flavour.’ Job done!” Lauren Laverne Next, it's something of a left turn, tackling Aphex Twin’s sleazy and sinister turn-of-the-century dance floor bomb Windowlicker and taking it somewhere completely unexpected, as Raz explains: “We wanted to go to a different place from our influences for this one. When we told people we will cover this tune everyone said ‘but how?!’ In Raz & Afla style. We had an idea of what elements to recreate from the original and how we can reference it within our spectrum of sounds. It was so much fun to do and really kicks off at our live shows.“ It’s a heavily percussive reinterpretation, replete with spooky wordless vocals, funky guitars and spine tingling synths that builds into something of a future Afro-house anthem, whilst respecting the genius of the original recording. And it’s not only the music that is paid tribute to, with graphic designer Michael Sallit once again coming up trumps and here using the inspiration of Chris Cunningham’s iconic artwork to deliver an equally tongue-in-cheek thing of beauty.…

This time, EFE contributes their track 'Confundir', while producer Durand (Latido) offers 'Si acaso muero' for reinterpretation by other artists. The result is two 10" White Label records, titled 'Madroit Remixes' and 'Andaluk Remixes'. In the first of these, deep house master Dubbyman delivers two interpretations of the material. Firstly, Dubbyman enlists acclaimed Swiss producer George Btp (aka Dan Piu/Zarenzeit) to craft a remix that takes 'Si acaso muero' into deep ambient house territory—slow-cooked with his signature touch—only to break down halfway through with a broken beat pattern that elevates the track, making it perfect for the club. On the B-side, Dubbyman revives his Man-Drake alias to deliver a downtempo and dub odyssey based on 'Confundir', maintaining the track’s identity throughout a song that serves as an ideal session opener, reminiscent of artists like Kruder & Dorfmeister. The second record opens with a remix of 'Si acaso muero' by Bazofia and Esteban Bove (members of the group Califato 3/4). Respecting much of the original material, they opt to transform the track into a breakbeat piece using a well-known drum sample. The result is a banger—perfect for splitting a set in two and making the crowd wonder what they’re listening to. On the B-side, pianist, composer, and producer Ylia (Susana Hernández) reimagines 'Confundir' as a deep UK bass and jungle track. Using dub and IDM techniques, she retains the original essence while elevating it into much darker and more adventurous sonic territory. Both records, in a very limited run and pressed by Artesanos del Groove, will be available on April 25 via the Electronic Flamenco Esquejes Bandcamp.…

OPOLOPO helps launch the Spring Revisited project, which invites highly respected house music producers to remix and re-edit classic tracks from New York's Spring Records. Spring Records operated through the 1970's, releasing many seminal soul, funk and disco tracks that have left their mark on today's music scene. This release sees OPOLOPO rework Millie Jackson's classic disco track, "We Got to Hit It Off." The original is famed for its soulful vocal performance and captivating lyrics about female empowerment. Its sweeping strings and funky bassline also add to its upbeat vibe and feel-good energy. OPOLOPO is a Swedish disco maestro and house music aficionado, he is a highly skilled producer who has the Midas touch when it comes to remixing music. He has done official remixes for artists such as Gregory Porter, Lisa Shaw, Barbara Tucker, and many other iconic vocalists. So, he was the perfect choice to remix Millie Jackson's "We Got to Hit It Off," and it's in a similar vein to the original music OPOLOPO has released through record labels such as Z Records, Reel People Music, and Local Talk. Talking about his contribution to the Sprint Revisited project, OPOLOPO said: "It was an absolute honour and a tremendous treat to remix a legendary R&B icon like Millie Jackson. We Got To Hit It Off is a standout example of her powerful vocals and ability to bring both passion and playfulness to her music. In my main mix, I tried to be respectful of the original, staying with the disco vibes while injecting a bit of funk and boogie. On the deeper mix, I aimed for a later time slot on the dance floor, when things are a bit more stripped down, sweaty and raw." Slo-mo Deep House cut ‘Rotten Fingers’ was originally released by wolf peaches and producer Robin Grey as a downtempo song (it’s well worth seeking out). As Ben Tidy puts it: “A real Sunday morning jam with great production from Robin.” After a chance meeting with Robin, Kerrier Collective got to work on the song bringing in regular collaborator Polly Meyrick on horns. “We wanted to make the Saturday night version of this Sunday morning Jam, so sped it up to a slow house tempo and got groovin’ with the drums. We were listening to a lot of Omar S’s slow crunky techno with 909 basslines and Nils Frahm’s subtle drops, and it seems we have paid homage to both of them in this track. This last section is really where Kerrier Collective and wolf peaches merge into one with Alfie’s strings, Polly’s horns and Ben’s synths sitting atop the vocals and chords. This was a real joy to work on. I hope you can feel how much we got into the track.” Second track ‘Fake Silence’ takes a more delicate and minimal path, with lo-fi drums, heavy sub bass and ice-cold piano chords giving way to dizzying vocals and entrancing plucked violin and concertina flourishes. “When we received the vocals back from wolf peaches for what would become ‘Fake Silence,’ there were three long takes of ideas” says Ben. “So many good ideas, and lots of them. We treated the takes like you would sample material, taking a bit from here and a bit from there, editing together a new chorus and some ideas for a verse. Thunderous power chords and nuanced percussion layering guide the track towards a cosmic void, echoing with mind-bending vocal samples from the cult sci-fi film ’12 Monkeys’, before a high-voltage crescendo transports you to the Planet Ogo. Remixes are provided by two masters of the scene: South Korean cosmic disco royalty, Shubostar, applies her trademark sound, introducing playful melodies, kinetic arps and retro-futuristic synths that elevate its seismic breakdown into outer space. Spanish new wave maestro, K-Effect, provides a more psychedelic contribution, weaving in tripped-out FX, clinical drum arrangements and low-end synths that propel the tune towards its ominous conclusion. ‘Cosmic Stuntman’, the second offering, is as intrepid as its name suggests. The first half is a minimalist soundscape defined by crunchy guitar riffs, energetic tambourines, cowbells and an array of spacey FX, before the second opens in throttle with a ferocious mid-range bass, cutting snares and cosmic pads that build in magnitude as the track reaches its spellbinding climax. Mexican dark wave legend, Rigopolar, follows with a tranced-out remix bolstered by robotic arpeggiators and mechanical guitars that propel you to Mach-10. Completing the package are reinterpretations of ‘Storming Heaven’ which first appeared on Emerald & Doreen Recordings and pays homage to Jay Steven’s eponymous book on LSD and the American dream. Argentinian dark disco producer and member of Ralph Lawson’s 2020 Soundsystem, Julian Sanza, cranks up the funk and reconfigures the track into a Balearic sunset trip. Long Shape, his latest project, is O Sótão’s first vinyl release, and the first to be delivered with higher standards of professionalism. Learning the trade, the processes, the timeframes, the costs, and having just completed 10 years of existence. A good time to go a bit deeper. In the summer, Tiago sent me a golden playlist of unfinished projects for a second opinion. The idea for a new record started there, and from the bunch we handpicked a selection that ended up making really a lot of sense for us. We were looking for wet deepness and eternal warm ups, pulling up the fader slowly. An invitation to leave our mental capsules and divert attention towards a seductive bassline cliff-hanging a dream. Progressiveness and jazz. Long shapes and melodies in the last frontier between nostalgia and hope. To help, we invited Miguel Tenreiro (a.k.a. Gazpa) to master the tracks, with him adding a smooth-extra-delicious pump on the beautiful original elements. Miguel also picked up the title-track for a remix treatment, breaking up the tempo with a hip-hop-electronica finale, sprinkled by a guitar solo from Zé Nuno - another great musician stemming from Mr. Bean’s bar, where we held a residency for the past year. Long Shape will drop on March 21st. Vinyl might be only available a bit later. It will be a landmark moment for us, being Tiago’s most complete work to date, and a better representation of his rich musical influences, expanding it, as we speak, to another level. Some thoughts don’t leave you. Some questions linger long after they’ve been asked. Dom Apes’ Wasted Energy EP exists in that space between contemplation and release, between old cycles and new perspectives. Written during a period of upheaval, the record reflects on loss, rejection, and uncertainty, but also on clarity, reinvention, and quiet hope. The title track, Wasted Energy, takes inspiration from an old Alfred Hitchcock interview where the director distills hatred into what it is: energy, wasted. Built around punchy breaks and widescreen melodies, the track provides both release and a statement: a rejection of toxicity in favour of creativity, connection, and forward motion. Sidelined moves in a different way. Rooted in feelings of rejection and isolation, it builds from curious, melancholic synth plucks salvaged from abandoned lockdown projects fragments of the past, given new life. It leans into a sense of quiet reflection, yet there’s something undeniable in its purposeful forward motion. The EP rounds off with Fuelless Consumption, which came together on a sober Friday night, written as Dom questioned whether music would still hit the same without the crutch of alcohol. A swelling, introspective closer, it leans into deep, somber textures, like coming up for air after a long night out. It shifts the energy just enough to feel like an ending, but one that leaves the door slightly open. Created between London and the North East, Wasted Energy sits in the push and pull between movement and stillness, between city life and solitude.
