Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedToday’s chapters in John’s Gospel very graphically illustrate the impact Jesus was having on the people and the jealousy this caused among their religious leaders. He heals a man who had been born blind, who had never been able to see – utterly remarkable. The religious leaders tell this man to “give glory to God, saying, “we know this man (Jesus) is a sinner” [9 v.24] They cannot deny that an amazing miracle has occurred, but say, “We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” The healed man answers them, Why this is an amazing thing! You do not know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes” [v.29,30] Their anger boils over against the man as he persists in reasoning with them and telling them, “If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” They end up telling him, “You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?’ And they cast him out.” [v.33,34] This made us think of the increasing blindness of so many today who keep on saying at every opportunity, indeed making opportunities, to declare there is NO god, there never was a Creator, everything that exists is the result of countless happens of pure chance! “This is an amazing thing” especially that people persist in this way of thinking! Yet in one way we can understand why this is so – it is because the established church, especially the R.C. church are so hypocritical – in some ways they are parallel to the religious people who surrounded Jesus. Those who are willing to read God’s word for themselves – and to keep reading so that they get its full flavour and meaning – are conscious of the amazing message that unfolds and that becomes clearer the more they read. But sadly, as we read in John’s next chapter there are others that hinder the message – Jesus says, “He who is a hired hand, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.” [v.12] Sadly this happened! But scattered sheep can listen and, even today, hear “the good shepherd” through reading the words which he inspired his followers to remember and write down (see ch. 14 v.25-27) so that true sheep, even in the 21st Century, can “hear” his voice by reading his words and those of his disciples and other of God’s prophets. If they feed on them every day they find the only true pasture in the wilderness of this world – and will come into the promised land.…

Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedWhile beyond Jordan Jesus is informed that his friend Lazarus is gravely ill and the messengers request that Jesus come immediately. But verse 4 says that our Lord’s response is to declare that this sickness of Lazarus is not unto death; but that Jesus might be glorified. After two days delay our Lord goes to his friends. Christ tells his disciples not to stumble; but to walk in the light, as long as the Light ie our Lord is with them. Jesus now plainly says that Lazarus is dead. This information probably raising more questions for his disciples than answers. When our Lord arrives note Martha’s unshakable conviction that Jesus is the resurrection and the life and any one believing in him would be raised up at the Last Day. Mary, however, had had her confidence in her Lord undermined by the Jewish rulers – called throughout John’s account “the Jews”. This caused Jesus to weep. The whole scenario was an out-working of the prophecy of Jeremiah 13 verses 15-17, which verses are cited three times by our Lord in John 11 verses 4-10. To show that Lazarus is one of the Lord’s sheep when our Lord’s voice of command is spoken with authority Lazarus came forth alive. Lazarus walked out in his grave clothes indicating that this was not the resurrection of the last day that Martha had spoken of. How infuriating to the authorities that Jesus had raised Lazarus. Did they respond to this miracle in belief – no? They immediately sought the death of Lazarus death and schemed Jesus’ own destruction. Caiaphas takes the lead in these matters. The Lord had predicted these events in his parable in Luke 16.…

Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedWhat did Jesus mean, “The Truth will set you free?” Free from what? The 8th chapter of John today contains aspects of the teachings of Jesus that we have to think around and put into context to get the correct meaning. The critics of Jesus were usually those whose thought processes were mechanical. They thought they had him cornered, if he said the Mosaic law should be observed and she should be stoned they would probably have done so, or got others to, and then blamed Jesus before the Roman authorities because the Jews had no right to put anyone to death – that is why they brought Jesus before Pilate.. See John 18 v.31. If Jesus has said something different, they would have denounced him before the people for not upholding the law! His reaction confounded them – and after he said “Let him who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her” [v.7] they slunk away from Jesus, no one was without sin among them. Only Jesus was without sin – and he said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you? She said, ‘No one Lord’ And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.’” [v.10,11] Notice how she addresses Jesus as “Lord”! She saw him as far more than a “teacher” which is how the Jews addressed him. Jesus speaks to all who come to him – in the same words as he spoke to the woman – whatever our failures have been, and the closer we come to “the light of the world” the more we are aware of those failures – but we also learn the truth of his words, “Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” [v.12] and all the “darkness” in our character will be obliterated, indeed Christ will then be “formed in you.” [Gal. 4 v.19] Jesus went on to tell them, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth and the truth will set you free” [v.31,32[ The key action on our part is to “abide” in the word of Jesus. John uses the Gk word for ‘abide’ more than 40 times in his gospel and the translators render it variously as ‘continue’, ‘dwell’ ‘remaining’ etc. Are you abiding in his word? Is the word ‘abiding’ in you? If the answer is ‘Yes’ – you have been set free! Jesus made the point, “ … I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin” – it has become part of their character. But “if the Son sets you free you will be free indeed” [v.36] He told the religious leaders, “…you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you.” [v.37] May it have found a place in us – in you – or will soon do so. Remember Jesus said, “Whoever is of God hears the words of God.” [v.47] – and as we read – we “hear.”…

Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedIn John 9 we have the 6th sign in the healing of the blind man. The discussion in this chapter is similar to the pattern established in chapter 5. Both the blind man and his parents are persecuted by the rulers for accepting Jesus. The formerly blind man gives a remarkable and compelling testimony that Jesus must be from God. The religious leaders spitefully cast out the man who has dumbfounded them with scriptural logic. Our Lord later finds this man in the temple so as to complete his restoration. These events most likely happened at the feast of the Dedication. John 10 is the magnificent account of Jesus being the door and the Good Shepherd. Christ had come that believers might have life and have it more abundantly verses 10-11. Our Lord by laying down his life for his sheep secured for believers that wonderful hope of eternal life in the kingdom of God. Once again the theme of chapter 10 is a repeat and elaboration of chapter 5 ie that his sheep will recognise his voice. In the purpose of bringing salvation to believers he and his Father are one ie united – but our Lord’s power is derived from his Father. The Jews reacted to our Lord’s words and by claiming that he was speaking blasphemy. Jesus proves from Psalm 82 that the judges of Israel were called “god” as they spoke God’s Word. The chapter finishes with Jesus going across the Jordan for some months – in Perea – where he remains until the events of chapter 11 would bring him back.…

Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedA really challenging saying of Jesus is, “If anyone thirsts let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water’” [John 7 v.37-38] Jesus is obviously NOT speaking of literal rivers. What does Jesus give people to drink? We recall the conversation Jesus had with the Samaritan woman, when he said he could provide “living water” to drink – if the woman had asked for it! [John 4 v.10] What did he mean? How can “rivers of living water” flow from the human heart? This gospel of John is a rich source of nutrients for a thirsty mind! We must ask ourselves. ‘Is my mind thirsty?’ Remember what Jesus taught in the Sermon on the mount? “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be satisfied” [Matt.5v.6] To do that you have to recognise you have a hunger and a thirst of that nature. How do you recognise that? Well, are you satisfied with the way you think, the things that occupy your mind? Do you go to bed at night thinking, that it had been a worthwhile day – spiritually? It is sad that many people do not realize they are suffering from spiritual malnutrition. It is tragic, especially among young people, that so many today are looking for “kicks” and their lives are largely froth and bubble, the very opposite of “living water”. John’s Gospel shows this “water” is related to “the spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive” [7 v.39]. Now it is obvious this refers to far more than the disciples being able to speak in other languages as happened on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2). Paul wrote that “in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised spirit through faith.” [Gal.3v.14]; this is the wonder of spiritual fellowship with the divine [2 Cor.13 v.14]. Alongside this we must put the words of Hebrews 6 v.5 that those who experienced Holy Spirit power in those days have “tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come.” Finally, in the Bible’s last message we have God on the throne saying, “To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. The one who conquers will have this heritage, I will be his God and he will be my son … “ [Rev. 21 v.6-8] How beyond imagining to have this as your heritage! Are you making progress in conquering (or overcoming) the polluted waters of this life? Are you thirsting for righteousness?…

A woman was brought to the Lord caught in the very act of adultery. Where was the man? It was a set up designed to trap Jesus. The Law of Moses made it very clear that adultery was punishable by stoning. As they persist in goading Jesus he said, “Let the one without sin cast the first stone”. And he stoops down and writes on the earth- most likely he wrote their names in fulfilment of Jeremiah 17 verse 13. One by one they left beginning at the eldest. Finally, the woman was left alone with the Lord and although he condemned her not, she was told to go and sin no more. A discussion follows about Jesus being the light of the world- one of the many Messianic titles that John used. This led on to a discussion regarding origins – our Lord was from God they were murderous liars and in no way children of Abraham. Only truth could set them free. Finally Jesus astounds them with a claim for him to be the entire focus of God’s purpose. Abraham understood this and rejoiced in that knowledge.…

Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedThe book of Numbers now tells us of Moses giving his final instructions to the people – as the LORD directed him. The people had completed their 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, all the unfaithful had died and now their children under the leadership of faithful Joshua together with Caleb and the faithful Levites would cross the Jordan and enter the promised land. It occurs to us that there is a parallel in this to what is to soon occur when Christ establishes his world-wide kingdom. Think about this. The LORD tells Moses as they are “by the Jordan at Jericho, saying, ‘Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When you pass over the Jordan … then you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you and destroy all their figured stones and destroy all their metal images and demolish all their high places.” [Ch. 33 v.50-52] Similarly, when God sends Jesus back to this earth it will be a time of “punishing the world for its evil, and the wicked for their iniquity” [Isaiah 13 v.11], but it will also surely be a time of removing all the things that people “worship” today – the things which are a modern equivalent of what the Canaanites had built and worshipped! Some of the things that will no longer exist are obvious; the Casino’s and gaming houses for example. If TV, DVDs and the like are to continue to be available, there will be a huge purging of the things in them that pander to fleshly thinking and doing.. Jesus said, “The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin” [Matt. 13 v.41]. When the people of Israel entered the promised land initially they were full of zeal and destroyed cities like Jericho, but they failed to complete the work and so the warning of Moses we read today came true. That which they “let remain, shall be as barbs and thorns in your side and they shall trouble you” [v.55]. It is obvious, with Christ in control as the King of the world, this will not happen in his kingdom. We need to make sure we develop a mindset now that will welcome and fully appreciate a cleansed earth. Pollution will be removed from the physical earth and also the things that pollute human minds. Concerning the future Jerusalem God told Jeremiah, “I will bring to it health and healing … this city shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and a glory before all the nations of the earth” [Ch.33 v.6,9] How wonderful to be there! Don’t you think so?…

Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedNumbers 34 describes the boundaries of the land Israel were to conquer and possess. The southern border was perpendicular to the lowest southern point of the Dead Sea. The western border was the Mediterranean Sea. The northern border was marked by a horizontal line from Mount Hor, believed by some to be near Hadrach, to the Mediterranean Sea. And the eastern border was marked by the Jordan River starting from Galilee at the Sea of Chinnereth, which is shaped like a harp and is so-called in the Hebrew language. Verses 16-29 describe the tribal chiefs, who would lead their tribe in the taking of their lands assigned by lot. Chapters 25-29 contain the proverbs of king Solomon which were transcribed by Hezekiah’s scribes, as verse 1 of chapter 25 tells. Verses 2-7 are proverbs which instruct kings in their behaviour. Deuteronomy 17 verses 18-20 commands kings to make their own personal copy of the Law – possibly a transcription by the king of the book of Deuteronomy. Having copied that Law the king was to read from his book every day of his life. Verses 2-7 contain a cluster of proverbs to guide the king in ruling wisely. Verse 2 tells that God has concealed treasures in His Word for kings to unravel. We as prospective monarchs must apply our minds to this task. It will not only help us in ruling our own lives, but will assist others in understanding the keys to the Kingdom of our Sovereign, when He sends His Son to rule upon the earth. Verse 7 onwards contain many proverbs quoted in the New Testament. We have selected only a handful including one quoted quoted by our Lord Jesus Christ in one of his parables to the Pharisees when he had beef an invited guest. Verses 8-26 are proverbs about behaving in humility and avoiding the pitfalls of pride. Verses 8-10 advise agreeing with our neighbour speedily, which our Master addresses in his sermon on the mount. Verse 15 advises a patient use of the tongue if we are to be persuasive. Verses- 21 is a proverb that is used by the Apostle Paul in Romans 12:19-21. Verse 24 advises great care in the choice of a lifelong marriage partner. The chapter concludes with an appeal for self control. John 7 records an unannounced visit of Jesus to Jerusalem at the Feast of Booths ie Tabernacles. There was a division among the people, as to whether our Lord was a good man, or a deceiver of the people. Jesus arrives in the middle of the feast. Many were convinced that he was the Christ. Although officers from the Sanhedrin were sent to arrest Jesus they could not do so because his time had not yet come. Jesus prophesied to them of his ascent to heaven and the giving of the Holy Spirit. Some said that this was the prophet like Moses. Others rejected this idea just because our Lord was from Galilee. Jesus just like Jonah, also from Gath-Hepher in Galilee told his audience to consider the sign of the prophet Jonah. We have seen in our earlier studies that the sign had many levels of significance, but chiefly spoke of Jesus’ resurrection.…

Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedToday’s 5th chapter of John includes the words of Jesus to the religious leaders who were jealous of his popularity: these men were not of the same calibre as Nicodemus who came to Jesus by night. Jesus tells them, “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life” [v.39] Their motive in searching God’s word was self-centred, they would gain prestige in the eyes of others – and – they took it for granted – prestige in the eyes of God. In contrast Jesus said, “I do not receive glory from people” [v.41] He then said, “I know that you do not have the love of God within you.” They had too much self-love! We need to meditate carefully on Jesus’ words – what is it to love God – as distinct from knowing he exists and reading about him in his word? Love arises from a relationship; Jesus asks them, “How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?” [v.44] Glory? Another word would be praise – patting one another on the back over achievements – this is constantly happening in sports. But God does not pat us on the back! Some words Paul addressed to the Romans have application, “ … a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man, but from God.” [2 v.29] The jealous Jewish leaders condemned Jesus for healing on the Sabbath and “even calling God his own Father.” [v.18] Jesus had said, “the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing” [v.19] He tells them, “His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, and you do not have his word abiding in you.” [v.38] God’s word has to come ‘alive’ in the minds of those who read it. The result will be an overwhelming sense of humility – greatly beyond human comprehension. It includes an awed contemplation from the depth of our hearts – what the Creator of all things must be like When his word really abides in a human heart it lays the foundation for a true and wonderful relationship with God. The end result is an even more awesome contemplation – for the Master said, initially to his disciples, – “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” But totally committed disciples know what to ask for! Contemplate what Jesus asked for! When we come to ch. 17 v.20 we will read, “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word …” And the result of that belief? Read what Jesus goes on to say.…

Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedProverbs 24 verses 1-32 concludes the 30 proverbs recorded in chapters 22-24. Verses 1-2 tells of the folly of envy. The rich and powerful frequently bring troubles. Verses 3-7 outline the blessings that come from wise thinking and wise actions. The metaphor of the house built by wisdom and the bounties which fill its rooms. By way of contrast verses 8-9 speak of the curses brought by the scorner. Verses 10-12 tell of the need for diligence and perseverance in order to achieve success. Verses 13-14 tells of seeking divine wisdom in contrast to being wise in one’s own conceits. Verses 15-16 shows that the evil plot the downfall of the just; but the righteous cannot be overthrown because Yahweh upholds them. Verses 17-20 speaks of keeping things in perspective. This means seeking the good of everyone – even one’s foes. Remember the righteous have a future. This is not the way for the evil who will be eradicated from the earth. Verses 21-22 says that the framing of one’s life is based on a reverence for the Almighty. Verses 23-34 give further sayings of the wise. Verses 23-26 outlines the need for honesty in dealing with others; and the need for nothing to be done by partiality. Verses 27-29 speak of truthfulness and fair dealing with others. Verses 30-34 tells of the results of slothfulness and how the lazy are reduced to poverty. John 6 records signs 4 and 5 – the feeding of the 5,000 and our Lord’s walking on the troubled sea. The feeding of the 5,000 took place in spring – a time of abundant green grass. It was Passover time (12 months before Jesus’ crucifixion) and just after the death of John the Baptist. Jesus, in testing Philip, asks where can Jesus and his Apostles purchase sufficient bread in the wilderness for this crowd; for our Lord already knew what he was going to do. From the personal lunch of a lad – five loaves and two fish Jesus feeds 5,000 and collects 12 baskets full of fragments. Having full bellies the multitude wants to forcibly make Jesus their king. Our Lord rapidly disperses the crowd and sends the disciples away by boat. Jesus goes into a mountain to pray. The Lord comes to the disciples walking on the water. No sooner had he joined them than they arrive at Capernaum – the city of comfort. This is a parable illustrating our vain toiling on the troubled sea of nations as we await the return of our Master. As soon as Jesus returns we will receive the peace he brings and the comforts of the kingdom age. At the synagogue in Capernaum a discussion takes place as Jesus tells them that he is the ‘bread of life’ – in contrast to the wilderness manna eaten by their fathers. The Son of God has been sealed in his thinking by his Father; and what they need to do was believe. Their being saved is through what the Father has done through His Son and all they can do is to accept this by believing on His Son. Isaiah 55 is a key link to this chapter and it focused on resurrection – “the sure mercies, ie chesed, to David”. Note the emphasis in John 6 and how many times Jesus refers to resurrection – verses 39, 44. Verse 45 quotes from Isaiah 54 verse 13. All who believe the faithful message of the gospel are “taught of God”. Jesus found that many would-be disciples leave him being unable to cope with the challenging ideas our Lord Jesus presents. Peter brings great comfort to our Lord and encouragement for every potential disciple by saying in verses 68-69, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed and come to know, that you are the Holy One of God”. ESV…

Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedToday’s chapter in Numbers (31) tells us about the death of Balaam and of those who accepted his counsel that the only way to combat the Israelites – was not by force – but by seducing them into immorality. They took his advice and put it into practice and it had worked! But now God acted! Our chapter starts, “The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Avenge the people of Israel….” Leading Moses to say, ‘Arm men from among you for war, that they may go against Midian to execute the LORD’s vengeance” [v.1-3] The result is the kings of Midian are slain “and they also killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword” We then read that it was “on Balaam’s advice” [v.16] that the Midianites had sent in women that “caused the people of Israel to act treacherously against the LORD … and so the plague came among the congregation …” So Balaam is killed and all those immoral leaders as Moses acted to “execute the Lord’s vengeance.” This “vengeance” is seen many times in the Old Testament both against Israel’s enemies and against Israel itself when they themselves lapsed into immorality. The same applies to spiritual Israel. that is, those who claim to follow Christ but whose way of life brings dishonour to Christ’s name, just as unfaithfulness by natural Israel brought dishonour to the LORD’s name. How easy it seems to be for both Jews and Christians to deceive themselves into thinking God will not deal with them when they slip into immoral ways of living. Balaam of all people, who had had such contact with God, as we read in chapters 22 to 24 should have had a fear of God! But ‘No’! Sadly the history of Christianity shows too many examples of similar failures. Look back at some blunt words of Paul we read last week in Galatians! “Do not be deceived God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” [6 v7-9] Balaam sowed the seeds of his own destruction although he had had so much contact with the true God. A lesson to us – what are we sowing? What will we reap?…

Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedJohn 5 records the third sign in the healing of the impotent man at the pool of Bethesda (meaning “the house of mercy”). It would seem that the Jews had a superstition about this place – just as surrounds the mythology of the waters of Lourdes. Some translations add, ‘it was said that an angel ..’. The man was about 38 years old and a symbol of Israel, who for 38 years were powerless and perishing in wilderness. The miracle occurs on the Sabbath day and so once again the Jews seek to persecute our Lord. In verses 19-47 Jesus witnesses to his sonship, his authority and truthfulness. There was no equality between our Lord and his Father – Jesus’ authority was derived from his Father. Our Lord Jesus had no power independently of his Father. And without the Father he could do nothing. But the authority of the Word spoken by Jesus extended to the raising of the dead. Those who were morally dead listened to Jesus and consequently enlightened and enlivened. This means that having now ‘heard’ the voice of the Son of God; they would be brought to life as they will be called forth to resurrection at the coming and kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ. The chapter concludes with Jesus outlining the witnesses that incontrovertibly proved he was from God.…

Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedNicodemus was “the teacher in Israel.” What an impact Jesus was now having among the people! Obviously Nicodemus was so affected that he felt compelled to come to talk with Jesus, but he comes by night! He declares, “no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him” [John 3 v.3]. A fascinating conversation follows. John is to mention him twice again, first when he is questioning the Pharisees about Jesus (7 v.50) and then, remarkably, when he associates with Joseph of Arimathea, in binding the body of Jesus and placing it in the tomb. [19 v.39] God’s inspired word intrigues us so many times, the more we read the more we want to read and pull together as much as we can the “hidden” stories; there are always fresh insights to be gained. Jesus challenges Nicodemus, “Unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” “See” can be understood in the present tense – a person’s eyes are opened when they are “born again.” When is this rebirth? “How can a man be born when he is old?” asks Nicodemus. It is a challenge to understand what Jesus means, when he answers, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he (or she) cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.””[3 v.5,6] One is born of water by baptism and both John the Baptist and Jesus’ disciples are now baptising many (4 v.1,2) But baptism is of no value unless there is also a rebirth of the person’s spirit, a new way of thinking and outlook on life “Baptism,” Peter was to later write “is an appeal to God for a good conscience “ (1 Peter 3 v.21) So we understand that baptism in water is of no value on its own. But, says Jesus, this rebirth of the spirit is like the wind, it is only seen by the affect it has on a person’s life. The wind cannot be seen, only its affects can be seen. The last verse in John 3 tells us, “whoever believes in the Son has eternal life” – that is – their names are “in the book of life” Yet those who falter after their spiritual rebirth are in danger of having their names blotted out of the book of life. (Rev. 3 v.5) Judas Iscariot is the glaring example. Returning to John 3 we note that Jesus says that “being born again” creates for us a relationship with “the light of the world” and “whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his (her) deeds have been carried out in God.” [v.21] Let us all make sure that is true of us.…

Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedJohn 4 deals with the incident between Jesus and the woman of Samaria in which he offers her “living water”. There follows a discussion between Jesus and the woman about the site of acceptable worship – Jerusalem, or Gerazim. Jesus firstly tells her that salvation is from the Jews. Acceptance of God is dependent on two factors sincerity and truth – these have always been the focus at Shechem (Joshua 14 verses 14-15; Judges 9 verses 14-15). The woman accepts Jesus as the Christ (Messiah) and she then has an incredible impact on helping the Samaritans to receive Jesus also. Philip would about 7 years later reap the gathering harvest now being down. That harvest is spoken about in Acts 8. From verse 46 to the end of John chapter 4 our Lord Jesus heals the son of an official from Capernaum – this being the second of the signs recorded by John and resuting in the official and that Nobleman – thought by some to be Herod’s keeper of the larder Chuza – and his entire household becoming believers in our Lord.…

Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedToday we started reading the Gospel of John and saw how Jesus called his first followers. It is evident Jesus made an immediate impact on those who met up with him starting from when Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. John’s Gospel, the last one to be written, in several parts fills in the gaps left by the first 3 Gospels. Of course some parts overlap; taken together they provide us with a multi-dimensional picture of the life on earth of the Son of God. As the personality of Jesus opens out to us, we see the impact he made on individuals and we see why even those sent to arrest him said, in excuse of their failure, “No one ever spoke like this man.” [7 v.46] When John the Baptist said, “Behold the Lamb of God” [1 v.36] it caused at least two to follow Jesus. Seeing them follow Jesus perceived their character, but he also knew his Father was at work in causing this. At the climax of his ministry he would say in prayer, “I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them is lost except the son of destruction” [17 v.12] Judas failed to “see” who Jesus really was. In today’s chapter we read how Philip told his friend Nathaniel, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also in the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth …” [v.45] So they knew their Bible! Nathaniel questions, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?’ Philip said to him, ‘Come and see’” We cannot go and see Jesus physically (not yet!) but we can ‘Come’ to God’s word and after careful examination ‘See’ what it really means, comparing scripture with scripture: only God’s word gives us the real reason for being alive – and, wonderfully, gives us a real hope for the future. An interesting example of what God’s word “inspires” us to do is in today’s chapter in the book of Numbers. We are not living under Moses’ law with all its system of offerings, but we can take the lesson that “day by day … you shall offer in the morning and … you shall offer at twilight …” [28 v.3,4] Today, God fearing people should, says Paul in the letter to the Hebrews, “Through (Christ) then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.” [13 v.15] Do your lips bear such fruit? Have you “come” to “see” what “the Lamb of God” means in your life? Do you offer praise as a result? The older we get the more fully we should be able to “see” this.…

Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedIn John 2 we have the first of the 8 signs John records. When Yahweh brought Israel out of Egypt, at the time of the Exodus, their departure was accompanied by miracles, wonders (Hebrew ‘Pala’ – cp the angel Palmoni – the wonderful numberer) and signs. That Hebrew word is the equivalent of the word used for “signs” in the record of John. The first of these signs took place at Cana, in Galilee. Jesus was there, together with his mother and his disciples, most likely those he had called in chapter 1. It was perhaps the wedding of a relative. The sign was turning water into the highest quality wine. The result was verse 11 – his disciples believing in Jesus and the manifestation of his glory. Between verses 13-22 Jesus cleanses the temple for the first time – doing so again at the end of his ministry. He fulfilled the words of Psalm 69 and gave them the sign of his resurrection, which he said would be after 3 days in the grave. There are 8 recorded signs in John’s record and many accounts of Jesus’ visits to Jerusalem. The other gospels omit all these visits. At the end of John 2 we are told Jesus would not commit himself to anyone since he knew what humans are like – Jesus’ understanding was possibly due 3 reasons: 1) what Scripture revealed; 2) Jesus’ own experience; 3) his ability to read people’s minds). Chapter 3 speaks of the first encounter between our Lord and Nicodemus, the holder of the second rank in the Sanhedrin (‘the teacher’). John chapter 3 tells us of Nicodemus’ first visit to Jesus; who in John’s gospel records 3 visits – in ch3; in ch7; and again in ch19. Each is a step in bringing Nicodemus to know the Christ (ch3 the man who came by night; ch7 he who first came by night; and ch19 an open disciple, who brought the spices to prepare Jesus’ body). The talk of chapter 3 centres in the imperative of being born “from above” – firstly by a mind developed by the Word of God 1 Peter 1:22-25 and then by immersion, or burial, in water. The 3rd chapter of John tells us that Jesus is the only man to go to heaven (v13) and salvation comes through belief in a crucified Messiah (v14 cp Numbers 21:4-9). The best known words of the Bible are found in John 3:16 – but read these words aloud and ponder verses 16-21. From verses 22 to the chapter’s end we are told of the incomparable greatness of our Lord Jesus Christ.…

Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedThe gospel record of John was most likely the last of the four written. Nor is it a summary of the ministry of the life of our Lord Jesus Christ. There are many more references to people discovering that Jesus was the Christ. Its theme is stated in chapter 20:31 “These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you might have life through his name.” It records 8 signs, which are emphatic proofs of the stated theme. Chapter 1 is deliberately a parallel to Genesis 1. For just as Genesis 1 described the natural creation, which came into being through the Word of God in six days. Two groups of three repeated – LIGHT, WATER, LIFE; days 1-3 are paralleled and duplicated in days 4-6.; so too with the new spiritual creation in Christ. Jesus is declared to have come to his own (by ellipsis- people ) and failed to be accepted. This was not the case among believers. What a lofty theme. Jesus was the Word of God in the flesh ie one of us in nature and passions; and yet without sin totally revealing the Father’s character to humanity. Read aloud verses 14-17 – Pause and Ponder. John was the disciple who rested on Jesus’ bosom during the Last Supper and surely he writes with a measure of understanding his comments in chapter 1:18. The record of Jesus’ baptism followed with John the Baptist’s announcement of verse 29 “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” From verses 35-42 we have the earliest call of the first four of Jesus’ disciples (later to become his Apostles) Andrew and John, Peter and James. From verses 43-51 we have the call of Philip and Nathanael. The latter convinced by our Lord’s ability to reveal what Nathanael was thinking that Jesus must be the Son of God and the King of Israel. Twice in the chapter we are told that these men had found the Messiah ie the Christ – first by Andrew (v41) and then Nathanael (v49). But the reality was he had found them and extended to them the authority to become ‘the sons of God’ (verses 12-13).…

This chapter addresses these two things. V.1-11 – In the orders for the division of the land, just given (Num. 26), no provision had been made for females, in case of failure of male issue. The five daughters of Zelophehad, therefore, considered themselves as destitute, having neither father nor brother, and feeling themselves entirely overlooked agreed to refer the case to Moses and the rulers, whether it were not equitable that they should inherit their father’s portion. This led to the enactment of an additional law to the civil code of Israel, which satisfactorily ascertained and amply secured the right of succession in cases of inheritance. This law, which is as reasonable as it is just, stands thus: 1. On the demise of the father, the estate descends to the sons. 2. If there be no son, the daughters succeed. 3. If there be no daughter, the brothers of the deceased inherit. 4. If there be no brethren, or paternal uncles, the estate goes to the grand uncles, or brothers of his father. 5. If there be no grand uncles, then the nearest of kin succeeds to the inheritance. The daughters of Zelophehad appear again in Num. 36:1-12. V.12-23 – Moses was allowed one view of the land promised to Abraham before his death. This raised the issue of who would replace him as leader of the nation. His question is answered by Yahweh in the appointment of Joshua.…

Verses 1-8 outlines wise thinking and the words which the wise speak – words which bring blessings to those who heed what was said. By contrast verses 6-7 tell us that a fool’s mouth is an invitation to strife and his words continually bring trouble upon his head. Gossip is the way of the fool and those associated with him will experience total disaster. Verses 9-19 speaks about the need for diligence in order to be successful. These are contrasted with the true protection, which never fails, the name of Yahweh is a fortress (v10). Those who trust in the LORD are imperishable. They are indestructible. The life of the faithful is in the hand of their Maker. They need have no fear of men, because of their reverence for the Almighty – Matthew 10:16-33. Read aloud slowly. Contemplate this message for how you will live your life before your Sovereign and as a witness to your community. The wise men speaks of pride preceding a fall (v12). We are told to listen before speaking (v13). Generosity paves the way for acceptance (v16). Don’t win an argument via persistence – be prepared to agree through a lot, ie it doesn’t matter if you never win. If you simply win through aggression, or because you won’t stop arguing you have lost a friend and a great deal more (v18). Verse 19 tells us that if your insistence creates a rift then it can only be healed via great efforts and immense sufferings. Verses 20-24 tell us, yet once again to be diligent in order to live adequately. What a great lesson verse 21 teaches – your tongue can save another person, or destroy them. A Godly companion in life is an aid and blessing in our walk towards the kingdom of God (v22). Be a close friend rather than a ruinous babbler (v24). According to Acts 28 Paul spent two years under house arrest in Rome (AD62-64). During this time Philippians, and Philemon were written. Acts 16 provided the background to the gospel arriving in Philippi. Philippians is called Paul’s letter of joy and its theme is, “Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say rejoice.” In chapter 1 of the letter the Apostle described his constant thanksgiving for the love of the believers in that city – colony which was heavily Roman in every way. He told them of the advance of the gospel in Rome and that even members of the Praetorian guard had become faithful believers. Unfortunately, not all ‘brethren’ were happy – there was a group of false believers (known as Judaisers) whose motives for preaching were to see Paul persecuted. Paul, indeed would have been happy to die for the faith, nonetheless he felt that continued living would be for the benefit of the believers. In chapter 2 we have wonderful exhortations of Christ’s mindset, as always being to honour and exalt his Father and for the benefit of others. Let that, said Paul, be the attitude of every believer. As God’s Son our Lord had a status higher than anyone; yet he suffered as a servant the death of the cross. Now he is exalted at the Father’s right hand with the name of Yahweh Himself (Isaiah 45). Believers bare the responsibility of shining as lights among this twisted world. He showed that Timothy and Epaphroditus both demonstrated Christ-like love for the believers in Philippi. Their own lives were put behind the course and purpose of the gospel.…

This is seen in the way that husbands and wives should love and respect each other; how children and parents ought to treat each other; even how slaves should behave towards their masters and masters to their slaves. When you walk in love you try to treat all these people and all mankind, in a kind and unselfish manner- walking in just the way the Lord Jesus Christ walked, remembering the love of God; for God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 Here are some guidelines for our walk. Cultivate the fruit of the Spirit ( goodness and righteousness) (5:9) Redeem the time- don’t waste it (16) Make melody in your heart to the LORD through Psalms and hymns (19) Offer thankful prayer regularly for yourself and God’s people, the saints (5:20 & 6:18) Be strong in the LORD in solid defence of the Scriptures and wear the whole armour of God, (6:14-17) .. Wear Truth as a belt and cover your heart with a breastplate of righteousness. As you walk, preach the Gospel, shield yourself with faith; protect your mind with the helmet of salvation and defend yourself with the sword of the Spirit- the Word of God. And let’s not forget how helpful a positive attitude is in our walk for . Prov 17: A merry heart doeth good like a medicine! So Let us not be diverted by the call of the word to sin, as did Israel and thus walked on the path which leads to death but rather travel the way to righteousness. Putting on Christ in baptism to become one of the saints.And making sure that our love for our Saviour, Jesus Christ is not just affection but an undying, practical, thankful agape love.…

Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedIn Ephesians 3 the Apostle Paul outlines the ‘mystery’ (the Greek word simply means ‘secret’) that God always intended for the Gentiles to be included in the blessings of the gospel. From verses 14-22 we read of the Apostle’s prayer for the believers’ spiritual strength and growth. Notice that the love of God surpasses understanding and includes four dimensions – length, breadth, depth and height. This indicates that the love of the Father cannot be measured. Chapter 4 contains a plea for unity among the body of believers. In the truth there is a sevenfold unity (verses 4-6). This is essentially because God, our Father is one. Those verses cite several Old Testament Scriptures supporting this purpose – Psalm 68; Deuteronomy 30. The result is that the distribution of gifts is defined by the function they fulfil in promoting and producing a united body. Each believer has been called to a new life described in verses 17-32. Carefully read verses 20-24 which tell us how faithful believers in Christ live by modelling their lives on his. Also contemplate the need to replace old evil habits with positive beneficial behaviours as verses 25-32 teach us. The last three verses say that any failure to act in a way that reveals that we are the children of the Almighty will grieve our loving Heavenly Father. The only way to overcome sin is by “replacement therapy”.…

Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedToday the last 2 chapters of Paul’s letter to the Galatians illustrate the sharp contrast between those who put all the emphasis in their living – to observe the Law of Moses and practice circumcision – in contrast to belonging to Christ for “in Christ Jesus”, writes Paul, “neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.” [5 v.6] Most of us are not affected by those who advocate keeping the law and circumcision today. But there are there are those who believe it is vital as to which day you come together to worship. In writing to the Colossians Paul advised: “ …. Let no one pass judgement on you in questions of food or drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath.” [2 v.16] Our salvation does not depend on us observing rules or days – other than the simplicity – and wonder – of remembering that Christ died for us.. Baptised believers are to meet in remembrance of his death in the way Jesus instituted just before his death. They prayerfully meet to partake of bread and wine (Luke 22 v.14-20) as “the new covenant in my blood” replacing the old covenant under the law of Moses. There is no command as to which day of the week this was to be observed. But initially, after the dramatic events on the day of Pentecost, with about 3,000 being baptised, they met “day by day … breaking bread in their homes” [Acts 2 v.41,46]. Acts 20 v.7 tells us that they met to break bread on “the first day of the week” – but there is no command about this. Paul told the Galatians, be “led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.” [5 v18]“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” [v.22-23] Now, to produce good fruit on a tree, much pruning, tending, watering, and protection from predators is needed, varying according to the environment. There is a parallel picture to this in the spiritual realm if we are to produce good spiritual fruit. The next and last verse in the chapter says, “And those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” This does not happen automatically, we need to feed on God’s word every day and to pray. Paul told the Colossians[Ch. 1 v.9,10]: “we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit …”.…

Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedThe LORD was waiting for the best time for the preaching of the gospel. Acts 19 records the events at Ephesus. The Word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed in that city and it became Paul’s base of operations throughout the then known region of Asia. Chapter 1 contains greetings and the faithful in Ephesus being described as having, in status, been elevated to heavenly places in Christ Jesus. From verses 15-22 the Apostle offers prayer and thanksgiving on the believers behalf. Paul outlines in verses 19-22 the great place Christ occupies to all believers. The Apostle tells the Ephesians that in the Lord Jesus Christ the Almighty’s power was seen in producing a righteous man who could then be raised from the dead. All four Greek words for power are used in those verses. Chapter 2 deals with the enlightenment of believers and their salvation by grace – on the basis of their faith. Believers salvation has nothing to do with their merits. However, a life of gratitude is necessitated from believers. In verses 11-18 Paul outlines the faithful’s changed status from hopeless nobodies to sanctified believers in Christ Jesus. The chapter concludes with the growth of the body of believers into a holy temple. A dwelling place for the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY. Slowly read aloud verses 17-22 and consider the foundation God has given us and that each of us determine to be a part of the LORD’s holy edifice.…

Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedTHE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT Contact with death, or even going into a tent where a dead body was, made the Israelite unclean under the Law. The remedy was for water of separation made from the ashes of a red heifer that was offered as a sin offering (Numbers 19) The red heifer was led “forth without the camp”. This pointed forward to Christ (Heb 13:12) who also suffered without the camp and so in Hebrews we are exhorted to go therefore unto him without the camp bearing his reproach. Just as the ashes of the heifer were for the purification of both Jew and gentile – stranger (v10) – the blood of Christ can cover the sins of any. There was no intrinsic virtue in the ashes. It required faith to believe in their efficacy – just like the blood of Jesus. Romans 6:23 states •The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God s eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. This was because the Lord Jesus had the opposite effect to the Law. He touched dead bodies and they came alive and was thus far superior to the water of separation (purification) made from the ashes of the Red Heifer •Heb 9:12-14 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? Rather than offering sacrifices, the Lord Jesus taught that the Law was fulfilled in love for others. Love God was the first Great Commandment and •Matt 22:38-40 the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. The Law of Moses was basically honouring God and loving your neighbour and it had been superseded by the Law of Christ. •Those who are led by Spirit are not under the Law( Galatians 5:18) Being led by the Spirit, means believing and practising the commandments of the Lord Jesus, and producing the fruit of the spirit, which is love, joy , peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and self-control and Paul states these are far better than the law. Our Love needs to be like God’s perfect love, an unselfish (agape) love.. Agape love is where you are prepared to unselfishly be like the Lord Jesus and give up all for the God you love and His servants, just as God gave His Son for us. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 states that someone showing this kind of love is long suffering, kind, doesn’t envy, doesn’t brag, or behave badly. They aren’t partial nor easily annoyed. With no evil thoughts and hating sin, they are truthful, patient, hopeful and good under pressure. And we can aim to be that kind of person, if we develop the fruit of the Spirit in our lives, striving to have the type of love which God has for us and which we see in His daily care for us and by His gift of His only Son. Paul says •Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. Gal 5:16 .…
