Für viele Menschen mag es überraschend klingen, aber Schnee und Eis stellen den Lebensraum für zahlreiche hochsensible Mikroorganismen dar. Die Limnologin Birgit Sattler beschäftigt sich mit diesen „extremen“ Bakterien, Viren und Algen, die sich an extreme Lebensbedingungen angepasst haben. Dabei arbeitet die Forscherin des Instituts für Ökologie der Uni Innsbruck häufig im Feld und ist dem mikrobiellen Leben nicht nur in den Gletschern und Gletscherhöhlen der nahegelegenen Alpen, sondern auch in den Eiswüsten der Arktis und Antarktis auf der Spur.
Die Anpassungsfähigkeit an niedrige Temperaturen, Nährstoffknappheit und wenig Licht machen Mikroorganismen im Eis zu interessanten „Forschungsobjekten“ im Hinblick auf pharmazeutische oder medizinische Entwicklungen. In „Zeit für Wissenschaft“ erzählt Dr. Birgit Sattler über ethische Herausforderungen, ihre Arbeit am körperlichen und psychischen Limit, potenzielles Leben im All und Teddybären im Eis.
