Transactions

• ForwardTommy Wingels was traded to the Ottawa Senators by the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday for forwards Buddy Robinson and Zack Stortini, and a seventh-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. Wingels, 28, has five goals, three assists and 15 penalty minutes in 37 games. Chosen by the Sharks in the sixth round (No. 177) of the 2008 NHL Draft, Wingels has 51 goals, 122 points and 197 penalty minutes in 337 NHL games, all with the Sharks. Wingels has a NHL salary-cap charge of $2.45 million in the final season of a three-year contract, according to Capfriendly.com. He can become an unrestricted free agent July 1. The Senators said he will join them in Ottawa on Wednesday. Wilson said Robinson and Stortini will join the San Jose Barracuda of the American Hockey League. Robinson (6-foot-6, 232 pounds), 25, has no points, two penalty minutes and four shots on goal in four games with Ottawa this season, and seven goals and five assists in 33 games with Binghamton in the AHL affiliate. He made his NHL debut with Ottawa last season and had a goal and an assist in three games. Stortini (6-2, 219), 31, has two goals and one assist in 22 games with Binghamton. • ForwardZack Smith signed a four-year, $13 million contract with the Ottawa Senators on Monday. It has an average annual value of $3.25 million and runs through the 2020-21 season. Smith, 28, is in the final year of a four-year, $7.55 million contract, according to CapFriendly. Smith, who was selected by the Senators in the third round (No. 79) of the 2008 NHL Draft, has 11 goals and 11 assists in 43 games this season. • The Montreal Canadiens acquired defensemanNikita Nesterov in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday. The Lightning receive defenseman prospect Jonathan Racine and a sixth-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. Nesterov, 23, has three goals and nine assists in 35 games this season, and eight goals and 20 assists in 119 NHL games, all with the Lightning, who selected him with the No. 148 pick in the 2011 NHL Draft. Racine, 23, was selected by the Florida Panthers with the No. 87 pick in the 2011 draft. He played one game for the Panthers during the 2013-14 season before being traded to Montreal on Oct. 8, 2016. • Owner Eugene Melnyk appointed Tom Anselmi, the former chief operating officer and president of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, as president and CEO of the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday, replacing Cyril Leeder. Melnyk said Anslemi, who led the development of Air Canada Centre in Toronto, is the man to spearhead the development of a new arena in downtown Ottawa as part of the redevelopment of LeBreton Flats. Melnyk was granted "preferred proponent" status by the National Capital Commission, which oversees the 53-acre LeBreton Flats area just west of Parliament Hill in downtown Ottawa, in November. Melnyk said that's when he started thinking he needed an executive like Anselmi to oversee the development. Melnyk recognized Leeder's role in bringing the NHL back to Ottawa and thanked him for 25 years of service. • Los Angeles Kings goaltenderJonathan Quick likely won't start playing again until early March at the earliest, general manager Dean Lombardi told LAKingsInsider.com on Tuesday. Quick hasn't played since injuring his groin in the first period of the season opener against the San Jose Sharks on Oct. 12. • The Detroit Red Wings will be without forwardsThomas Vanek and Dylan Larkin against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Tuesday (7 p.m. ET; SN, NESN, FS-D, NHL.TV). Vanek is day to day because of a lower-body injury sustained when he appeared to be hit by a shot from forward Andreas Athanasiou at the end of the first period of the Red Wings' 1-0 overtime loss to the New York Rangers on Sunday. He left the ice on his own and did not return. Vanek's 31 points (12 goals, 19 assists) are tied with captain Henrik Zetterberg for the Red Wings lead despite Vanek missing 11 games from Oct. 27 to Nov. 18 because of a hip injury. He signed a one-year contract, reportedly worth $2.6 million, with Detroit on July 1 after the Minnesota Wild bought out the final year of his contract on June 24. Larkin was placed on seven-day injured reserve because of an upper-body injury. • GoalieJake Allen is not with the St. Louis Blues to start a road trip that begins Saturday against the Winnipeg Jets (3 p.m. ET; TSN3, FS-MW; NHL.TV). The decision was made by general manager Doug Armstrong after Allen's recent struggles, which include being pulled from a 7-3 loss to the Washington Capitals on Thursday, the third straight start and fourth time in six games he was pulled. Allen has allowed 10 goals on 36 shots the past three starts (.722 save percentage). "Jake's struggling right now and I made a decision [Thursday] night that I think taking a day away and getting a total reset ... he could get a reset traveling with the team, but I wanted a complete reset and when we come back on Sunday, he's back in the net and he's ready to go," Armstrong said. "To me, he's going to take a day to get a reset with his family, just had a young baby, but the play needs to improve and I want to give him a fresh start. ... He practiced today and now he can go home and when we practice on Sunday, be ready to go." Allen, who was unavailable for comment, is 17-12-3 with a 2.85 goals-against average and .897 save percentage. Hutton is 6-6-2 with a 2.80 GAA and .892 save percentage. • Anaheim Ducks forwardJakob Silfverberg has an upper-body injury and won't travel on their upcoming road trip. The Ducks visit the Minnesota Wild on Saturday (9 p.m. ET; FS-N, PRIME, NHL.TV) and the Winnipeg Jets on Monday. Silfverberg, who hasn't missed a game this season, was injured in the third period of a 2-1 victory against the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday. He has 13 goals and 29 points in 48 games. • Dallas Stars defensemanJohnny Oduya was placed on injured reserve on Friday after re-aggravating an ankle injury. The move is retroactive to Tuesday. Oduya left in the second period of the Stars 7-6 victory against the New York Rangers on Tuesday. He missed 10 games from Nov. 21-Dec.10 with the same injury. Oduya has one goal and six assists in 36 games this season and leads the Stars in blocked shots (80). Defenseman Julius Honka was recalled from Texas of the American Hockey League. • Ottawa Senators forwardClarke MacArthur will not play this season. MacArthur, 31, sustained a concussion during training camp but was able to participate in full practices in December. He has not played since Oct. 4, 2015, limited to four games last season. MacArthur, who is on Long Term Injured Reserve, has had post-concussion symptoms for nearly two years but had been steadfast in his desire to return to the lineup this season. He is under contract through 2019-20. • Jonathan Huberdeauand Aleksander Barkov are recovering from injury, but Florida Panthers coach Tom Rowe said Thursday there's a possibility one or both might not return this season. Huberdeau has yet to play this season because of an Achilles injury sustained Oct. 8 in the Panthers' final preseason game. • Colorado Avalanche goaltenderSemyon Varlamov is scheduled to have hip surgery and will be sidelined for the remainder of the season. Varlamov has been in and out of the Avalanche lineup. He has missed 12 of the past 18 games because of a groin injury. "After further evaluation from our team doctors, it was determined that the best road to recovery was surgery," Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic told the Denver Post. "Doing this procedure at this time ensures that Semyon will be fully healthy for the start of training camp." Acquired by the Avalanche in a trade with the Washington Capitals for a first- and second-round pick in the 2012 NHL Draft on July 1, 2011, Varlamov was the runner-up for the Vezina Trophy in 2013-14 after going 41-14-6 with a 2.41 goals-against average, .927 save percentage and two shutouts to help Colorado win the Central Division with 112 points. This season, Varlamov is 6-17-0, with a 3.38 GAA, .898 save percentage and one shutout. He last appeared in a game on Jan. 17, a 6-4 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks at Pepsi Center. The Avalanche will move forward with goalies Calvin Pickard and Spencer Martin. They resume their schedule at the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday (10 p.m. ET; SN, SN1, PRIME, ALT, NHL.TV) 30th in the NHL at 13-31-2 (28 points).

Milestones/Records/Honors/Deaths:

• When Bryan Murray made the decision to leave California and move close to home to coach the Ottawa Senators in 2004, he figured he would do that for four years and wind down his distinguished NHL career. A dozen years later, Murray is still working and his important contributions to the Senators will be recognized when he becomes the first member of the Senators Ring of Honour on Tuesday. He will be honored before a home game against the Washington Capitals (7:30 p.m. ET; RDS2, TSN5, CSN-DC+, NHL.TV), the team that gave Murray his chance to break into the League in 1981. Murray, 74, was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer in June 2014 (he continues chemotherapy and alternative treatments and has been encouraged by the results) and stepped down as GM in May to focus on his health and to spend time with his family. He stayed on as senior hockey adviser to Senators general manager Pierre Dorion. Murray said being recognized as the first member of the Ring of Honour takes on special significance after former Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson had his No. 11 retired Dec. 29. • Pittsburgh Penguins left wing Conor Sheary, New York Islanders goaltender Thomas Greiss and Washington Capitals right wing J. Oshie have been named the NHL's "Three Stars" for the week ending Jan. 22. Sheary led the NHL with six goals and nine points in four games, highlighted by a trio of multi-goal performances, to lift the Penguins (30-11-5, 65 points) to a perfect 4-0-0 week. Greiss went 2-0-1 with a 0.98 goals-against average, .971 save percentage and two shutouts to guide the Islanders (19-17-9, 47 points) to seven out of a possible eight standings points. • Vancouver Canucks captainHenrik Sedin scored a second-period goal during the Canucks' 2-1 victory against the Florida Panthers to become the first player in franchise history to reach 1,000 points (233 goals, 767 assists). * Sedin became the fourth Sweden-born player in NHL history to register 1,000 career points, joining Mats Sundin (564-785-1,349), Daniel Alfredsson (444-713-1,157) and Nicklas Lidstrom (264-878-1,142). https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-news-and-notes-for-jan-21/c-285942282 Sedin is the 85th player to score 1,000 NHL points, the 38th to do it with one franchise, and the fourth who was born in Sweden. Sedin has 233 goals and 767 assists in 1,213 games in 16 seasons in the NHL, all with Vancouver. The 36-year-old center has 11 goals and 19 assists this season. He didn't get an assist on Luca Sbisa's winning goal early in the third period but he started the play that led to it.
• Columbus Blue Jackets forwardCam Atkinson was added to the roster Thursday for the 2017 Honda NHL All-Star Game in Los Angeles on Sunday (3:30 p.m. ET; NBC, SN, TVA Sports). He will replace injured Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin for the Metropolitan Division. Atkinson, 27, was tied for second in the NHL with 24 goals and tied for seventh with 46 points. He has five game-winning goals for the Blue Jackets (32-12-4), who are second in the division, four points behind the Washington Capitals. • Arizona Coyotes forwardPeter Holland has been fined $3,611.11, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for punching an unsuspecting opponent, Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ondrej Palat, during NHL Game No. 698 in Arizona on Saturday, Jan. 21, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today. The incident occurred at 9:05 of the second period. • The Vegas Golden Knights could hire their first coach "before the end of the season," owner Bill Foley told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "At this point, I'd say it's 50-50 we have our head coach in place before the season's over," Foley said Monday. The expansion team reportedly was going to name its coach after the NHL regular season in April or perhaps after the NHL Expansion Draft and 2017 NHL Draft in late June. But the newspaper speculates the timetable has been accelerated because of possible interest in former Florida Panthers coach Gerard Gallant. Gallant was fired by Florida on Nov. 27. The New York Islanders reportedly requested permission to interview Gallant after they fired Jack Capuano on Jan. 17. Asked by the Review-Journal if Gallant is the Golden Knights' No. 1 candidate, Foley said, "No comment. But I believe we're going to get a very good coach." Gallant was 96-64-25 with the Panthers since 2014-15, and was 56-76-6 (4 ties) with the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2003-07. Prior to the 2017 Coors Light NHL All-Star Skills Competition™, NHL legends will face celebrities from the worlds of movies, television and music in the2017 NHL All-Star Celebrity Shootout™, a friendly hockey game at 2:15 p.m. PT at STAPLES Center. Fan-elected captains, Carey Price of the Atlantic Division, and K. Magnitka gained swift revenge for yesterday’s 3-5 defeat at home to Avangard … and star forward Sergei Mozyakin scored his 37th goal of the season to set a new KHL record for scoring in the regular season.

Mozyakin opened the scoring in the 15th minute to beat the previous best, set by Steve Moses for Jokerit in 2014-15, then got an assist on Danis Zaripov’s first goal of the night to re-establish Metallurg’s lead after Ilya Mikheyev tied it up early in the second period.

Story # 2:

On a weekend dominated by established stars, youngster Andrei Altybarmakyan put his own name up in lights with a brilliant game-winning goal for team Chernyshov in the Grand Final.

The 2017 All-Star Game took on a new format: four teams representing the league’s four divisions and contesting semi-finals and the final over two 10-minute periods of four-on-four action. A further innovation saw the four top players from the MHL youth league’s Challenge Cup (Russian version of Memorial Cup in CHL) get an invite to Sunday’s big event. Altybarmakyan, who plays for SKA Silver Lions, produced a match-winning performance for Team West in the youth game and followed it up in some style playing with the league’s biggest stars.

His big moment came four minutes from the end of the final when he collected Maxim Shalunov’s pass, backed across the slot and bedazzled CSKA goalie Ilya Sorokin with some neat stick-handling before applying the backhand finish to make it 3-2.

Little wonder the youngster, who also claimed an assist as Sibir’s Shalunov opened the scoring in the final, described the day as a great occasion. “I never dreamed the day would go so well,” he said. “I’d like to thank everyone who organized such a festival for me personally and for all the guys here. The fans were terrific, even if some of them struggled to pronounce my surname!”

Altybarmakyan’s winner overshadowed the performance of Lokomotiv forward Brandon Kozun, who plunder four goals in two games for Team Tarasov. He blasted a hat-trick in the 6-2 semi-final win over Team Bobrov, and put Tarasov 2-1 up in the final. But an equalizer from Nigel Dawes(Barys) – just moments after he promised to go out and score on his next shift during an interview on KHL.TV – and Altybarmakyan’s winner saw Kozun finish on the losing side.
