Matt Foley is a poet rockstar, surfer, Buddhist, yoga teacher, and amazing guy. He is the author of two books of poetry, We Could Be Oceans and The Typewriter Sutra. Matt has also released an album of live spoken word poetry, entitled What You Will Need in Class Today. His poetry has appeared in Illuminations: An International Magazine of Contemporary Writing, Hand in Hand: Poets Respond to Race, and IndieFeed: Performance Poetry. His poem “Dear Officer: A Poem for Walter Scott” was recently nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
Matt has performed in coffee shops, classrooms, and poetry venues across the country. In Charleston, Matt is a co-organizer of The Unspoken Wordpoetry series, which hosts monthly open mics, poetry slams, and readings by featured poets. He is the 2017 Holy City Grand Slam Champion and was a member of the Holy City Slam Team that competed in the 2014 Southern Fried Poetry Slam. His work in the Charleston community was recently featured in the Charleston City Paper.
Matt is deeply passionate about helping people nurture their creative gifts. In 2017, he launched Contribute Your Verse, a coaching program for creative writers utilizing workshops and 1-on-1 personal coaching. In 2014, he founded Holy City Youth Slam, which hosts creative writing workshops and poetry slam competitions for young people in the Charleston area.
This may be one of my favorite episodes to date. I'm excited to share this conversation with you.
