How Do You Get Booked on Podcast Interviews?

Now I just literally got off the phone with John from Entrepreneurs on Fire. If you’re familiar with the show on podcast, it’s one of the popular podcasts on iTunes in the world. John has millions and millions of listeners. I’m honored to be on his show. Once I’ve gone off the show, I turned off my recorder and I’ve having this conversation with you. I do get people asking me, “Dan, how do I get booked on podcasts? How do I get booked on these shows?”

The answer is something more simple than you might think. First of all, you have to let people know on your website or some sort that you do give interviews. I give interviews, on average, I would say about once a week. I give an average of 50 or 50 something interviews per year. That’s a lot of interviews.

Now I know you might be thinking, “Well, maybe I’m not ready for that or I don’t have that radio experience. I don’t have a radio voice.” Well I don’t have a radio voice either. I speak with a freaking accent. Okay? So don’t wait to get on a show, get on a show and then practice and get comfortable with it.

Create a One Pager and Let Them Know You Are Available

So how do you get booked on these shows? First of all, on your website, maybe add some kind of a media page and let people know, “Hey, I’ve available to be interviewed. These are the topics that I talk about.” And you can put together a one-pager, which is what I have. It basically has your picture, a little bit of bio, your background and topics that you talk about – your area of expertise. Also add recommended questions for your host to ask you. So that’s pretty easy. Add a nice, full-color one-pager pdf file. Then just go and approach all the podcasts and say, “Hey, looking for a guest on these types of topics? This is what I do.”

So that’s what I did in the beginning. Now I have a person, an agent to help me book these shows. Also, because I’ve done so many shows and other hosts and other podcast owners see what I do, they want me to get on their show. So I now actually have more people approaching me and I don’t need to actively seek out to be on whatever shows anymore. But for you in the beginning, you need to do that. You got to get out there and push your brand. Get your message out there. Sell yourself. Sell yourself, put a one-pager and book your time.

Put Them On Your Media Page to Get More

What you’ll notice is if you’ve done a number of them, maybe 2, 3, 5, 10, now you put that on your media page. You can see on www.danlok.com media page, I’ve done so many. I don’t even put all the interviews I’ve done there. But there are a lot. There are a lot of interviews. Once you’ve done some of those, people see you doing that, they know that that’s what you do, more and more people will approach you and say, “Hey, do you want to be a guest for my show?”

And in the beginning, let me tell you this. You might get lucky, but forget about trying to be on the most popular shows. You need to earn your way and rights to be on those shows. In the beginning you might get on some new podcast that doesn’t have a big audience. That’s okay. Think of that as just your practice. You’re practicing how to be a good guest on a show. Once you’ve done enough of that, here’s a thing with podcasts. You never know who’s listening to that show and how or when it’s going to show up. So you might be on a show with only a few hundred listeners, but then one of the listeners may be a podcast owner of a big show and say, “I like what you’re talking about. Awesome. Let me invite and bring you on.” You will see that as well.

How Podcasts Can Help You and Your Brand

For any consultant and coach, you can use podcast in so many ways. And I’ve talked about this in some past episodes. You can go and meet new people, it’s a good way to network and expand your contact list. You get to learn from people, that’s awesome. It’s good for your personal brand. It’s a platform that’s also nice. Not a very good lead generation platform but it’s a very good personal branding platform. Also, by having those podcasts, if you use it properly, it’s good for positioning too.

You know that sometimes I post on Facebook on different things, that I show on people that, “Hey, I’m so honored to be on this show and have been interviewed.” You are putting this content out there. These are what I call authority content. These are designed to position your authority. Who gets interviewed in the society? Experts and celebrities. If you’ve been in a lot of interviews, it gives you a lot of credibility versus other people who may be in your same industry doing the same thing. If you’ve been interviewed a number of times you can use those and take those interviews, email to your list and show them.

There is No Such Thing as Over Exposure

It’s an indirect way of touching your list without hard selling. You just demonstrate your expertise and share these content to them. People would listen to that and say, “Yeah, you know what? I like what he or she is talking about. Maybe I should get in touch and see if I need some help there.”

So that’s how you get booked on podcasts. It’s not rocket science. Get a one-pager, add a media page and go out there and just push, push and push. There’s no such thing as over exposure.
